Why is gas priced at $2.199 a gallon instead of $2.19?
Are the oil companies that desperate for 9/10ths of a penny?

Why don't any gas stations dare to be different? I can't recall EVER seeing a gas station that didn't take that 9/10ths of a penny.

Yes.
Ask me again in July or August when it is $4.199 a gallon.
I'm in the petrochemical industry.

I pay the exact same for 85 octane that everyone else in the US pays for 87.
Colorado enjoys being shagged rotten by the gas companies.

actually you probabbly get gas with no ethanol which sorta artifically ups the octane # as I understand it. If that's true you're gettting about 10% more gasoline in your gasoline.

89 octane is the lowest grade here. I think elevation is one of the reasons for the lower octane, but I don't know the chemical reasoning for that.

Can gas really go up 2 dollars a gallon in the span of a few months? Won't that toss the ol' economy into a tail spin?

What I am hearing from the production folks is yes. All our refineries in the US are at maximum production and cannot keep up with the demand. Our last new refinery was built in the 1960's. No one wants a refinery near their house, but they must be located along a waterway which puts them right in residential territory. Also the refineries are in dire need of repair, upgrade and modernization.
Crude is expected to go from $53.00 per barrel to $100.00 per barrel before December this year. Goldman-Sachs has confirmed this. This is not just spot price or water cooler chit chat.

State Tax alone in PA is .25 per gallon. Then you need to add Federal Tax.

Precisely. It's called odd pricing. Learned about it in Intro to Marketing.
