George Washington is rolling in his grave.
Hubby, and I got into it last night as he brought up how some ignorant (the guy is really young) editor was complaining about the cost. Obviously hubby took the privately funded stance

well, they "are" spending it.....always a good thing for the economy when they do. It's the "tone" I guess for me and I would have to agree with Genie, it's no doubt always been expensive and excessive, the press is just pounding it a bit much. But it's working for me. |
That's the argument a lot of my die-hard conservative friends are using--that it is putting money back into the economy. You have to hire people to work for the caterers, the bartenders, the hotel staff, etc......so in that sense, it is a good thing. But then again, I shake my head every time one of my friends spends $40K on a wedding reception too. It's hard to find a middle ground on an issue like this. I'm no bleeding heart but I do think the money, or at least a decent part of it, "could" theoretically be spent feeding OUR country's hungry, building better schools in underserved areas, etc.....but like I said, it's not my place to tell Richie Rich how to piss away his money. I'm with you, CB....I'd like to think I would be a little more responsible if I were that rich, but I don't want people judging me on my actions either. I was relieved to hear that WE aren't paying for this though. I have enough issues on how my taxes are being pissed away.
I think I am going to start another thread about the foreign aid thing though--I'd really like to hear how people feel about that.

I have found that when the best argument anyone can come up with for going ahead with a government project is "It will mean jobs," that's a great indication that the program is a bad, bad idea.

The money spent and goods/services provided (a.k.a. donations) lack humility and good taste. Most of the political and entertainment hoohahs lack both - no matter the political leanings. Then again, I prefer simple and elegant celebrations.

If that is case, then we need to shut down 80% of Washington. My first stop would be at the Dept. of Education.

then sonny we can cut back the amount of federal law enforcement. Have the FBI do it all, eliminate the DEA and ATF, too much redundancy there too.

I assume that you are being sarcastic....no?
I think that spending this type of $$$ on a big party when there are so many other places in this country that need help is sad but typical. I don't think that people who have the means, such as those who are contributing to W's party, do enough to help others right here at home. I'm making a generalization obviously, but wouldn't it be great if we lived in a society where "keeping up with the Jones" meant how much charity and volunteer work you did?

40 million dollars seems minuscule when you compare what will be spent producing, playing, protecting, etc. The Super Bowl.

There's a whooooole nother ball of wax there! I agree....totally. I think that we spend wayyyyy too much $$$ on pro sports and the entertainment industry...from the Super Bowl to what we pay people to star in blockbuster films.

Doesn't it say no sarcasm on the rules of this forum?
It will be interesting to see if the non-donors who plan to turn their backs on W will get into the front row and if so, whether they'll get any camera time.

I didn't take it that way. I took it as a statement

I am NOT being sarcastic. That is a point I am making, I think the federal level law enforcement is too large. For example, DEA, ATF and the FBI all do drug investigations.

my "then Sonny" was a continuation of my cuts. I was continuing my thought, since it was another idea, I put it in another thread.
