I think I made each of my kids start mowing the grass the summer they turned 12. Never unattended though, mostly cause I spend too much time at home.
ps - worst idea ever. I divided the lawn up into 4 sections. Son, daughter, daughter and dad. Took forever to get them to mow their 3 sections. I don't think the entire lawn ever got mowed on the same day.
Edit :: all with a gas-powered push mower.

Supervision: never was watched as a small kid or allowed
No supervision (with parent) 16 years old
No supervision (no parent) 18 after I had to pay back all the dents I put in my parents' stationwagon.

I was probably doing it in my early teens. I would let a kid at 12 do it with supervision. 14 or 15 without. But it really depends on the kid. If he's clumsy....
I probably would not make my daughter cut the grass. But it would be strongly encouraged.

When we lived in Charlotte, I was going to let Libby do it when she turned 12. The situation changed and I was unable to make that happen, and now that we live in an apt it is unnecessary, but at the age of 12, I would have let her, with supervision of some sort.
Re: Mech's statement about not having a daughter do it, I am against treating the children any differently in this regard. Libby will know how to do some of the traditionally guy things (changing oil, mowing grass, etc) just as the boys will know how to do dishes/laundry, and all the other household chores. They need to be able to do all of these things on their own when they're grown up, and not have to depend on someone else to do them for them. JMO.

Never did. Our townhome association had landscapers that did all that sort of stuff.
My parents let me mow our lawn unsupervised when I was 8.

we were so poor we didn't have grass......we just grew turnips, which is all we ever had to eat, unless I could hit a crow with a turnip.......I was out pulling weeds from the turnip patch when I was almost 2.....

A 10 year old mows my grass, unsupervised.
Of course, he does EVERYTHING unsupervised. Lights fireworks off his townhouse balcony, plays "flashlight tag" at 1:00 a.m. in the street, etc...

he was 13 or 14 i think. it's a push/power mower. he used to want to do it. now it takes some prodding. he does the neighbors' too; that takes some prodding as well....LOOK AT THE NEIGHBORHOOD! it looks like no one lives here!!!!
unsupervised? i think he was always on his own with it, after the first few times.
unsupervised, with no one home -- i really didn't feel comfortable leaving the house and him out there with the mower somewhere till he was 16. but that's us.

I was mowing the lawn at 8 with a push reel mower. At 10 I was using a gas powered reel mower, and then a push rotary mower at around 12.
We had a lot of lawn (farm). At 14 I learned how to drive...on our big Ford farm tractor. Then I had to mow all the field edges and such with the brush-hog and my brother ended up with the lawn mowing. Usualy took one full day to mow all the grass.
