Posted: 12/23/03 - 11:05 Post subject: poll not poll: gym memberships (part 498)
I have one membership that is paid up through the end of 2004. The gym is located close to my home (far from work) and I go there in the very not crowded mornings. I don't get up early enough (nor do I want to ) to do weights and whatever other workout I'm doing (swimming/spinning/running). After work it is a complete zoo and trying to get any equipment you would want is next to impossible (nevermind the people parading around for parading around's sake ) SOOooo, I'm seriously considering (again) joining the gym in the adjacent building to do weights at lunch.
Pros:
*I can get my run/swim/spin in in the morning and still do weights
*Escape from annoying cow-orker lunches (with cow-workers who enter the 'who can lose the most weight the fastest' contests) and crappy mexican food
*With classes I have less time outside of work and skoo to workout, working out at lunch is the only option (and this gym is basically the only choice, unless someone wants to subsidize this and I could go to a really pimp place... )
*New and improved Buff Pffff in time for spandex filled cycling season
*Less guilt for not braving the masses after work at my crowded gym
Cons:
*$30/month additional (although again, my other gym is paid up in full, to the tune of $13/month)
*Some cow-orkers (who obsess about how many carbs/soy protein/anti-oxidents anyone is eating at any given time ) work out there, so there is a run-in factor (and I'm not even mentioning the whole locker room factor )
*that whole sweaty factor and getting ready again for work
So (finally) the poll here is: Do you work out at lunch? Do you have 1 or more than one gym membership? (If you don't mind saying) How much do you pay for it? and should I do this???

I did have several at one time. I was in the same boat, one paid for and one convenient. My last job had lockers with showers so I used to run at lunch. I miss that This company won't let consultant use the inhouse gym
As long as there are no long term contracts, give the work gym a shot.

Good point, there are no commitments on that gym. I basically have to tell them "thats all, thanks" and my membership is done.

Keep both! My main gym is paid annually, and I love it. We also use the one on base since it tends to be open holidays etc when ours isn't. (of course, it's free for us, which does make a difference)

I'm a lunch runner. Either right from work or at the fitness center a few blocks away on the gerbilmills. If I have a noon meeting, I usually run then before work from the fitness center. Our CEO (who just left, so I hope this doesn't change) was a runner too and got the office to pay 3/4th the price, so outta pocket hits me about 16/mo. The only drawbacks to noon running is I usually end up being gone for 1.25 or 1.5 hours, so a flexible schedule is a must. And as for the cooldown factor, I keep a desk fan going for a bit afterwards, cuz even after a shower, I'm still stay pretty warm.
With the cow-orker run-ins, I'd say that's a Pro instead of a Con. When they actually see what legitimate training is like, you'll gain a whole new respect

I'd say go for both memberships...if you can swing it.
Wear a set of headphones if you think you'll have possible run-ins with cow-orkers. Usually people stay clear from having any conversation with you if you wear them. It worked for me anyway.

I have two. The Y for pool use and a branch is near the house. The other is near the office and is what I consider my "real" gym--the Y would go before Powerhouse.
But I say keep both if you can swing it.

well, there's always counseling. i'd do it. even tho' i don't work out at lunch or belong to a gym. if it's financially doable, i'd be there.

Given your reasons and the fact your other gym membership is already paid up, I think it makes sense. I have in the past had a need for two gyms. I was a member of one just because they have an indoor track which I use in inclement weather since I hate treadmill running. My regular gym I used for strength training. But since, my employer added a state of the art weight room in our training building so now I'm back to one paid membership again.
Cheryl, you doing the Houston again this year?

I pay $35/month (no committment) for use of a Gold's Gym near my house. Work is about 25 minutes away from home for me. I do virtually all of my weekly workouts and alot of winter running on week nights at the gym. If I had a family (and coresponding week night obligations), I wouldn't hesitate to join a gym near my work and shift my sessions to lunch time each day. I'm definitely not a morning person for running or weight training.

See if your boss will let you come in an hour later and not take a lunch. if not, suck it up and get up earlier. I can't run at lunch (I run way too slow for me to get in the mileage I want and shower/clean up in an hour) so I run before work 3x week, other two days lift before work with one lunchtime lifting workout (reminds me, gotta get back into that schedule).
