OK, I can fight it no longer. My $7 a month plan with my heavy, bulky cell phone from 1996 will no longer cut it. The Paramedic made me see that I need something better and smaller so I won't die on the side of the road while biking, miles away from home.

What I want: roaming - free. Picture phone with free download capabilities - race photos! Unlimited nights and weekends (preferably nights starting at 7pm rather than 9pm). Voice mail. Long distance free is a huge plus.

Now go! Fetch me a plan!

Sprint has the Nights start at 7pm thing, I think. Most others charge a little extra for that option (Cingular = $7 last time I checked). Everythng else you're looking for should be easy to get from any provider.

Didn't Cingular just buy out AT&T? Or was it another company? Would think that the sales reps for the buyee (whatever it was) would be sweet now... ready to negotiate because the sales reps want to prove themselves to upcoming-new management.

I have no advice though.

I think Cingular with the GSM phones has the plans with night and weekends starting at 7pm. I've never had a problem with Cingular, and since they're getting bigger, the network shouldn't have any problems. It all depends on how much you want to spend... and how good service is in your area. I personally wouldn't get Sprint here just because service is horrible. I imagine in the Northeast all services are good though... densely packed people that don't know what country is...

Tof is Cellular Communications Man, and I think you will not get free roaming. Period. That's where they make the big bucks; the moment you set foot outside your coverage area. Be prepared to pay $29.95 per minute while dying on the side of the highway far from home.

Exactly why I'm hoping to capitalize on the nightmarish experiences of others.

Convince the company you work for that you're a valuable employee and that if they should ever need to get in touch with you, that they should provide the phone and the plan.

Problem solved.

And have them own me? NEVAH! Plus we use Sprint here. When I've used one of their phones, the service has been lackluster at best.

We have Verizon, they have pretty good rates, and I have only found one dead spot in our area. I don't have a camera phone, but a cow-orker does and pays 4.00 a month for unlimited pictures.

My monthly bill runs about $75.00 a month, which gives us 500 minutes 0600-2100, and 3100 minutes from 2101-0559. I pay $5.99 additinal for mobile web and text messaging.
