Yes, but I have DSL at home and it requires a land line for some reason. Tivo, if Santa brings it to me, also requires a land line.

I have a bottom of the barrel cordless and no features. It rings, I answer it. If I ain't there it takes a message. I pretty much despise phones.

When we had DSL after we switched from dialup (we had 2 phone lines by then) we just used the one phone line that had been shut down for the dsl line. You need the phone jack & access to the wires, yes, but it does not have to have active telephone service on it. DVD sends things digitially, whereas the phone sends things analog(ally??) or at least that was my understanding. This is why you could also have a dsl line on a splitter with the phone line, since they don't travel in the same way, they don't interrupt one another.

Not sure about TiVO.

Maybe PH knows.

Don't remember. Check your ISP's web site. I'm sure it's in the help section.

In my area the code to disable call waiting is *70. Just add that to the beginning of the number you dial to connect to the internet. It should be the same in your area also, but in case it isn't, you may want to check. All of the dial codes would be listed in the front (first 30 pages of BS) of your phone book.

We're switching our land line to cell as soon as portability goes into effect.

I already have a land line in my home office that the fax and DSL run through, so our land line is essentially unneccesary, especially at the rate BellSouth bills us each month.

Oh, and call ID rocks, BTW.

And portability would be....?

Is that where you can keep your phone number?

With one kidlet still at home, we have a land line with call waiting only. I too hate call waiting, so I ignore it most of the time, but it does come in handy.

Delta and I would do fine with walkie-talkies. It seems we talk to each other 99.9% of the time.

Damn straight. Doesn't matter if it's your home phone number or your cell number. You can now jump to a different wireless company and keep your existing numba...

Now keep in mind, it's an entirely new process and they'll be some problems at first so you may want to wait some until all the companies get their glitches under control and such, pfffffff.

I had considered giving up my landline, but after 9/11 said no way. Had it not been for landlines, I would not have known my brother was alive for at least three days (cell lines were impossible to use due to the high traffic, and he didn't make it out of the city for three days). Extreme, but you never know.

On the line itself we just have call-waiting. We had caller ID years ago and the numbers that showed up were the people we knew, not all the telemarketers and other unavailable numbers. So I want no part of it.

Caller ID here with another function available from the local provider. I can't recall the term for it but...if the incoming caller/phone doesn't supply their phone number, it is transferred to a recording which informs them that all calls without numbers will be dropped. The caller then has the option of keying in their number or hanging up. I have no idea how many calls from telemarketers, etc. have been prevented from ringing my phone but it sure has been a lot quieter since that feature was added.
