Pet Food Recalled In 23 States

December 22, 2005 12:31 p.m. EST

Christina Ficara - All Headline News Staff Reporter

Gaston, South Carolina (AHN) - Diamond Pet Food is recalling Diamond, Country Value and Professional brand dog and cat foods after discovering aflatoxin in a product manufactured at a facility in Gaston, South Carolina.

Aflatoxin is a naturally occurring toxic chemical byproduct of mold, which can cause illness in pets.

The pet food was distributed throughout 23 states including Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia, Vermont, and Virginia.

Products being recalled have date codes "Best by 01-March-07" through "Best by 11-June-07."

Symptoms of aflatoxin poisoning include lethargy, loss of appetite, occasional vomiting, and bloody diarrhea.

well cats yes, but for dogs it depends on the breed, i've never seen a lethargic Jack Russel Terrier.

In my case, the breeder is also the vet. (Which is cool, because he gives me a 10% on vet services.) He feeds his shelties Eukanuba...on which I get a nice discount...no reason to change brands now!

Apparently, this problem isn't rare. A quick call to the vet and I was told that they treat this with B-12 and Vitamin C. Their best guess? Rat poison must taste good...to dogs.
