Posted: 08/22/06 - 14:42 Post subject: perhaps i'll test drive a few cars this afternoon...
i've got time to kill and don't really feel like cleaning up my room or using up my own gas.
i think i'd like to test drive some cars. specifically a Smart Car and a Mini, if either exist in automatic form (i should *really* learn to drive a standard). not sure what else would be practical, but just thought it'd be fun.
my backup transportation (re: my mom's car) may not be available to me in the dead cold of december when i'm working christmas hours (which means crappy bus hours) - so i might actually have to get a vehicle (not that i can afford any of the previously mentioned)...
on a side note - maybe i could room with my buddy that lives a 20 minute walk away from work for the month... that wouldn't be too terrible?
anyway -
what should i test drive today? i'm open to suggestions and can't wait for the more then likely hilairity that should follow this post...

Yep. BMW and "not expensive" are at opposite ends of the spectrum.
For kicks, call someone local who works on them and ask what they charge for a major tune up. Then resist the urge to ask if the price quoted is in lira.

out the arse and then some. the older they are, the harder they fall and you'll be lucky to find a mechanic that will work on one and do it justice. stay away. stay far away unless all you want to do is babysit that car. old BMWs are for millionaires.

Old Bimmers are going to fall into one of two categories: either lovingly maintained (with a folder full of maintenance receipts), or beaten within an inch of their lives. And it's going to be tough to tell which of those it is by looking at a car online.
Unless you've got a full complement of tools and a good range of mechanical know-how (and/or a friend who's a foreign car mechanic), this is not a good idea.
Buy a used Toyota or Honda. Parts are available anywhere, and the drivetrains'll go 250K without a major teardown. Just be aware that thieves love Civics - we take calls for stolen/burglarized Civics almost daily.

i don't want to buy a honda because there are far too many bone heads souping up their civics and racing around town here. i hate them with a passion.
i don't know anything about fixing cars, and don't really know anyone that does.
any suggestions for something that would look hip like a BMW and function well? i just don't want to get something the same as everyone else (if possible). keeping in mind that i'm really just gathering ideas. hopefully i won't even have to go this route.

Scion TC:
.
Really nice little coupes with a bulletproof Camry drivetrain.
I know a couple people who have 'em and love 'em...a bit pricey new. Check the inventory at your local Carmax to see if they have any used.
Oh, and...learn to drive a stick, fercryinoutloud.

Carmax
An auto dealer chain that carries all makes & models. Went there numerous times with a friend when he bought a car. It was actually close to a pain-free buying experience.
