Posted: 01/15/05 - 01:13 Post subject: pee color
so in my loose attempt at loosing weight, ive cut waaay back on soda and have been drinking a TON of water. like close to or more than a liter a day. but my pee is still dark yellow. not dark, dark. but definately too dark for the amount of water that ive been drinking.
some other diet changes ive made are eating more whole grain breads/pasta. a bit more protein. and more fruits/veggies, but not too much more than i already had been eating.
any ideas on the cause? or should i go back to the dr?

if you drink less than a liter (or less than well over a liter), you may still not be getting enough water. a liter is something like 1/3.8 gallons, no? i think the generic standard for how much water to drink is 1/2 ounce per pound you weigh... so metric system... conversion... too much math for this time of night. (why oh why did we have to be different than the rest of the world?) but also, if you're running and sweating, most likely, you're perspiring some of what you would be, well, peeing. that's also something to take into consideration before worrying.
do you take a multivitamin or anything like that? even if not, you're probably getting much more vitamins from the increase in whole grains, veggies, and meat in your diet than you're used to. "dark pee" is usually just because it's more "concentrated," so it may also be due to excess vitamins/minerals that your body doesn't use getting flushed out.

Just a liter, that's it? That is like 33 oz or something right? The old saying about 8 glasses a day is good but some people need more. I drink a gallon a day usually and I weigh 125lbs. And I tell people at the gym half you body weight in ounces. I think you need more. And haven't you been on antibiotics lately? That can affect pee color too I think.
Edited cuz what I said earlier is not what I meant.

At the minimum you should be drinking 64 ounces a day.
At a liter a day you are probably dehydrated

No, not at all. When you said you drink a lot then said a liter I was hoping you were mistaken and meant at least 2 liters.

I watch my pee colour to monitor hydration and find that I need 2-3 litres a day to maintain clear urine. If I drink alcohol or more than 2 cups of coffee its more like 3-4 litres.

Take your body weight and divide it by .5 is the formula I have been told to use to determine how much water you should drink per day.

It's half your body weight in ounces. If you weigh 130lbs, drink at least 65 ounces of water per day. Drinking ice-cold water is better, since your body uses more energy in heating it up (to your body temp) or some such thing. So you get hydrated and burn a couple extra calories in the process.

Oh, okay, that makes more sense now. Dividing by .5 is effectively multiplying by 2, so that confused me, lol. I was wondering if they were recommending I drink 250 ounces per day! Heh
