suddenly started hurting saturday and hasn't really changed status since. Say the good natured nagging from many many friends and family is starting to get to you alright already, I get it what doctor would you see?
I've got a PPO so I don't need a referral, do I go straight to an unknown orthopedic or just to my regular general practitioner?

Ask around with your sports-minded friends & family. Call your GP to see who s/he would recommend re. sports orthopod.

Whichever doc you can find that's a runner...just be sure they're a runner. Otherwise the advice you'll get is "just stop running"

podiatrist. He'll /she'll know immediately whether it needs to be referred further and how to best take care of your injury. Thus skipping the gp who would probably refer you anyway.

I agree. At best, it's a podiatric problem, if not, then he'll know who to send you to. GP's are useless, all they'll do is shrug, maybe get an x ray and tell you to stop running.
Which, by the way, YOU SHOULD DO until you find out what this is.

Thanks. I'm a little overwhelmed. We have such a good insurance plan I have 4 pages (small print, 8 columns across) of orthopedic sugeons, 3 pages of sports medicine and 2 1/2 of podiatry. What a thing to complain about, right? I just can't figure out where to start....
I do trust my GP, she has really helped my asthma and never was her answer "well quit being active" in fact, its been exactly the opposite.
I just got an orthopedic recommend from a co-worker. If I can get in there quickly I'll start there I guess.

Print out your running log
Go to the podiatrist
Show him/her how much you run
Tell him/her when the marathon is
Ask him/her what can be done to get you to finish the race
Then ask/him her how to fix the problem and how to prevent it from happening again
You have to be up front that you want to be aggresive in the treatment. Most patients don't really care or are getting workman's comp.
You have to remind the doctor that you are one of those insane and obsessed runners dedicated to finishing their goal race and that "stop running" is not going to work for you. Tell him that running is like breathing for you.
I did this for my Achilles problem. After I established how important running was to me, the doc started to help out and got me in touch with a really good athletic trainer.

Alright, I have an appt with a 'foot specialist' at a recommended orthopedic office for Wed morning. But, my mom just called back remembering her 'running maniac' (her words) podiatrist that cured her PF. I'm calling him now and will go there if I can get in.

I bet it was unavoidable that she would get it.
Cheryl - is it only your foot? Everything else is fine?

Just the lateral edge of my right foot. Left foot and everything else is fine. I'm getting a little soreness from my oh so attractive overcompensating limp, but thats completely separate I believe, and not a big deal.

Did you try switching shoes? I saw your post in mid-packers.
Maybe you could just hop on the good foot from now until the marathon?
