I took my car to be inspected and just got the call that it will cost between $500-$600 to fix everything.

I just discussed it with FIL, and we think the guy is ripping me off, so I'm taking the car somewhere else. This is the same guy who wanted to charge me $1,000 for a transmission job, when it didn't have any fluid in it.

poor keltic - more "stupid" car problems.
i took mine in today for a $21.00 oil change. well, the gas pedal was sticking a little so ----- $125.00 later i am reemed, steamed and dry-cleaned by those punks.
they claimed my fuel injection system had carbon buildup and needed a good cleaning. some other internal parts were quite "filthy" as well. yeah, right. story of my life.
the gas pedal does work much better now. i always feel like such a SUCKER when i am in that place.
nothing like $600 for a car repair.
maybe you should buy a toyota

good for you, hope you find a better deal.
My hubby and I are pissed at ourselves because we made a rash decision to get the work done, both were having horrible days, I needed my car back and we should've taken our time and got another estimate. But, can't do anything about it now....

You and/or your FIL can probably do the brake lines yourselves. I've never done it, but I doubt it is too hard. No special machines required.
Shocks = One of the easiest things ever to replace on a car. Struts are a completely different story though.
Emergency brake cable shouldn't be that hard either, but then again, I've never done one.

it may be possible to have it inspected without repairing these things. I have replaced brake hoses before too. it isn't too hard. I'll check into doing the shocks too.

Shocks only have one bolt at each end. 2 bolts x 2 shocks = 4 bolts total. Takes about 20 minutes.
