Says my pack of Wrigley's Extra sugar free gum, classic bubble flavor: Not a low calorie food.
Yeah? And?

I've wondered the same thing! But....it IS a low calorie food! What is it, like 5 calories or less? Better than regular sugar gum, right?
I have no clue why they label things, particularly gum like that. My only guess (no knowledge here, just a total guess) is that there might be an FDA regulation where if something is "sugar free" (typically aimed at diabetics) that they have to tell you its not necessarily a low-cal food. Or not. But Orbit and Trident are labeled that way too and it cracks me up.

One stick is 5 calories. But it's not even food!

when I googled "not a low calorie food":
| Quote: | Q:Why does the statement Not a Low Calorie Food appear on POST® Shredded Wheat?
A: Food and Drug Administration rules require the statement, so that a No Sugar Added or Sugar-Free statement won't be confused with Low Calorie or Reduced Calorie .

Now, how would they label Big Macs?
" Warning: This is way beyond being a "no calorie food". This is "adds way too much junk to your trunk" food".

Huh. You know I always took "low sugar" to mean exactly that. Comparitively low sugar. Who'd confuse that with calories? Check the packaging, yo.

A dozen Snackwells cookies is not better for you than one full fat full sugar Oreo.

The dumb thing is, those same people who don't read the "calorie" line also won't read the "not a low calorie food".

That's what I was thinking. It's really small text that is printed light pink on a regular pink background. I had to work to see it.

It's like the sleep-aid medicines that are always advertised on the evening news (strange the networks approved those commercials for their newscasts...). Among the potential side effects is "MAY CAUSE DROWSINESS."
