I went to a running store today (Fleet Feet) . they watched me walk, they watched me run. I tried on several pair of shoes. They decided that I needed the Brooks Trance for $120.00 That was not a price I was prepared to pay (I had set my top limit at $80). I liked the shoes, and will probably reward myself with them in September, if I achieve some goals.

I bought a pair of Saucony Grid Shadows for considerably less, but added insoles for a bit more stability. They didn't feel as nice as the Brooks' but i do like them.

Did I buy myself some time here with the Saucony's or should I have gone with the Brooks' (and paid the consequences at home, with the wife?)

$120? Are your feet really that 'specialized'? Sounds to me like they were trying to make a high end sale.

I agree with Randy Steve, 120 bux is above my limit for shoes, and it sounds like they were going for the higher sale. I usually spend 80-90 on mine. I run in Asics and I love them, so I stick with what works. You have to go with what works best for you. If you like the shadows stick with them. I would say that if you got really serious about your training, say 75+ miles a week, then maybe you should spend more.

I agree with those other two hooligans, $120 is quite a bit to spend on running shoes that will be replaced in 400 miles. Now if it were a pair of strappy stilettos, that would be completely different.

OK, I did think it was odd that they had several lines of shoes, adidas, asics, New Balance, Nike, Saucony, Mizuno, but were only able to show me a few that were appropriate for me. Maybe one trip to that store was enough. I now know that I am a neutral pronator and I can look for those shoes online.....

Keltic, I worked in a running specialty store for 5 years. If the store you went to was any good, they should have been able to give you at least 3 shoes as options. As for your biomechanics, you're either a neutral runner, and under-pronator (about 10% of the population) or a pronator (about 75% of the population). I'm guessing you pronate since you said you put inserts into your shoes. As for what shoe, if you don't have any injuries with the Sauconys and the inserts, then stay with them.
