if you were having a small party at your home (25 people) and one of the invited people is a recovering alcoholic, age 23, would you have beer in the cooler with the water/pop/tea you are planning on serving, assuming the other guests will most likely be expecting a cold beer....it's an afternoon thing.

Yes I would have it. It's up to the recovering person to resist all temptation - not up to their friends and relatives to make sure they resist.

That's an interesting question.
it can be looked at a couple ways:
1. He's recovering and has temptations everywhere. So why not?
2. You could not have beer in the cooler because you feel that its too much of a temptation for him being right in his face...
I personaly, having alcoholics in my family, and sometimes feel bitter about it would have the beer in the cooler, they need those temptations to help them figure out that 'Hey, i don't Need it'.
just my 2 cents

4% of your guests are going to have a problem with alcohol and you're willing to accommodate them? You're nicer than I am.
If 4% of your guests had an eating disorder would you consider not serving food?
If 4% of your guests had a pet allergy, would you send Spot to the pet boarders and have the carpet steam cleaned?
Muslim? No pork? onandonandon
/now if you'll pardon me, I'm lately for sensitivity training.

No wonder you can't get anyone to show up at your parties.

Why did the Seinfeld episode come to mind?
I'd take Keltic's approach, and ask the person in recovery.

I invite peoples pets and serve them alcohol at my parties - it keeps things lively. Nothing like a pack of drunken dogs trying to catch a stoned cat for entertainment.

i agree with this line of thinking, however, it is family and every other "gathering" we've been too since his AA days have been without any alcohol at all, in any way shape of form..
also, his mother will be there and it's just kinda out of respect i guess....i suppose i could call her and see how she feels...that just feels awwwwkwarrrrd. besides, what's she gonna say? NO BEER FOR YOUR PARTY!!
mr.'s gonna have a problem with my suggestion, that's a fact jack.

I'm still going to slice this down the middle: is he recently out of treatment? then maybe I'd consider going non-alcoholic for the party. are we talking 6 months sober? I'd serve the alcohol, knowing that if he really wanted it he could get it on his own anyway, and having it at your party is no more of a temptation than stopping at the bar down the street.

Since he's been out a couple of years, it's possible that he's been in similar situations since then. And if he hasn't, at least he'll be surrounded by family to help support him rather then with a group of friends who may not be aware of his past, or are too busy partying to care.
