Posted: 07/17/05 - 10:10 Post subject: my vacation - long and boring probably
was a bit out of the ordinary this year.... went to the same fishing camp with mostly the same people in the cabins but I got a well deserved reputation for towing boats (on land or on water), renting out motors and performing repair work.....
7/9 - 2:20 a.m. my phone rings. It's the Marine! 15 to 20 minutes of chat with him and since my alarm was set to go off at 3:15 a.m. we got an early start. Drive like a bat out of hell, arrive at camp in 7 hrs and 55 minutes. Unpack, put boat in water, kick back to enjoy a couple of cold ones. About 3 pm camp owner informs me I have a phone call. Having no idea who would be calling me up here I return the call to find out it's one of fellow vacationers, he and wife are located at a store about 30 miles from camp which was as far as the tow truck operator would tow their boat. Their hitch had broken off their van some 80 miles earlier. So I drive down there and tow their boat back to camp. After they unpacked I towed it down to the boat ramp for them. Return to my cabin to find out that Canada's version of the Beverly Hillbillies have taken up residence in the cabin behind me. Also, I have to put my spare trailer tire on as a very large bubble has occurred on one of my tires.
7/10 - good morning of fishing. make a giant breakfast for son #2 and his buddy who are with us. Head back out for some fishing later - guy and his wife in cabin right next to us are rowing their boat back. This guy was a former college rower and moving along quite well but was thankful to have us give them a tow back to dock for the last 3/8 of a mile. His motor had crapped out, we putzed with it later for an hour or so and couldn't figure it out. Since I have a spare outboard, a 9.9 hp kicker motor on my boat and know him well and trust him, I loaned it to him till his motor was repaired. He expressed gratitude by keeping me well supplied with beer the remainder of the week.
Meanwhile the Ontario hillbillies are really really loud and have turned the area in front of their cabin (right in front of my door) into a veritable junkyard of kid's toys, yapping dogs, empty pop cans and other assorted debris. This family consisted of a 50ish couple with their two adult children, a 26 yr old son with some slight mental disability and a 30 yr old daughter with three young heathens of her own. And did I mention, they are really loud, rarely speaking in normal tones.
7/11 thru 7/13: fairly normal days, very hot, fishing is pretty fair and the beer is cold. The hillbillies motor has long since broken down and they are fishing from the dock and have turned it into an obstacle course of general clutter. They are very nice people, just annoying at times. They get another motor today that they've borrowed from a friend, a 30 yr old Johnson 10 hp that sounds like a bucket of bolts but seems to run.
7/14: return from fishing in the morning, the motor cover is off motor no. 2 for the hb's. Knowing the inevitable is about to happen, I pretend not to notice but I am asked to help repair it. I retrieve a few wrenches and a cold Labatts, disassemble the spring loaded coil pull cord that they've pulled the rope out of, retie the rope in place, rewind the spring and reassemble. Mr. HB has observed the whole thing closely fortunately. The motor runs again and they now have a new American hero. Hands were shook, thank you's given and the mentally challenged boy gave me a fishing lure that he had made. He was thrilled beyond belief when I used it and managed to catch a few fish on it. Oh yeah, despite my advice on how to pull the rope to start the engine, they managed to pull it out again but Mr. HB does the repair this time.
This evening we had a group fish fry/dinner and my Canadian buddy who is stricken with MS and his family come to camp for the afternoon. We have a great time and consume large quantities of food & beer despite thunderstorms coming thru and sending everyone for cover a few times.
7/15: pretty uneventful except that first broken boat motor is returned and working and I receive my kicker motor back with many thanks.
7/16: the long drive home, very uneventful including a 5 minute stop at customs when we had heard all kinds of dire stories about 2 hr waits to get thru.
Conclusion: I had a blast as usual.

I did run a couple of days, not much though. Heat, massive amounts of deer flies and a lack of desire to wake up at 5 a.m. to beat the heat did me in.

Canada rocks! It sounds wonderful! And the call from the Marine had to be the best part!
