tomorrow i take soccer boy in for a diabetic retinopathy eye exam. he gets one every year to check for beginning signs of blindness in his 14-year old gorgeous bedroom eyes. he is now at "high risk" for developing nerve and eye problems due to his veteran status with the disease.

we both hate this-- he has to give up a saturday morning. i have to sit there, in that dark room, while that doctor practically crawls into his dilated eyes. dead silence for 45 seconds, except the sound of a mother's heart beating through her chest. my silent prayer being said over and over in my head. looks at one eye, then the other. in years past, he just flicks on the light and says "those are the most perfect eyes i've seen all week".

my son just sighs with boredom. i hit my knees, grab the doctor around the ankles, praise God and modern science for another year of perfect vision.

i hope tomorrow goes as planned.

I have a nephew with juvenile diabetes that has been on insulin since he was 4 y.o. ... I know of the many trials and tribs both he and my sister (his mom) have been through as the deal day to day with this disease....

best of luck to the both of you tomorrow!
