Posted: 04/10/03 - 08:52 Post subject: my parents just gave me some unsettling news
I drop Sawyer off at their house this morning and they ask if I will be picking him up. I said that I thought my wife would be and asked why. "Well we need to tell you something, but it can wait" So I press them a little more. They say "do you have time now?" I said, "how bad is it?" It turns out that my nephew is going to be tested for autism. He is not yet 2 years old. My mom said she has noticed little things about him that would indicate that. My brother and his family live in MA so I see them maybe once a year. Then they hit me with "don't let on that we told you. they're in denial about it."

Denial is the last thing that little boy needs. Autism is not something you can shove under the rug. I sure hope that someone gets that in their heads soon.

Randy's right. All the research I have done about autism states that the quicker a child gets into an educational program geared for his needs, the higher the likelihood of being able to mainstream and function almost seamlessly in society.
I hope they find out it's not autism. But, if it is, there have been some amazing advancements in just the last few years in regards to autistic education.

I'm sure it's very difficult for them to accept that something could be wrong. But if it is autism it's best to be diagnosed at an early age.
Doug Flutie's son is autistic and he has a web site with some information and links.

Hopefully they get over the denial soon, and get your nephew treated, its not something that is going to go away on its own.

sounds like even though they are in denial, they are doing the right thing and getting him tested. I'm sure they're quite in shock at the moment. Give them time, I'm sure they'll do what's right and necessary.

they are talking about testing in July..... I've got to find out why they are waiting so long. I'm hoping that's not a waiting list.

parenting an autistic child has got to be the parenting challenge of the century. i'm sure Pebbles could tell you lots more about it; i lived next door to an austistic child for years; it broke my heart.

Update: I had his age wrong....he will be 3 in May. I also got some more info out of my mom. The daycare he is in got suspicious about his development about a year ago and suggested an in-home program that would help. Now this in-home program is suggesting the testing for autism. It appears that July is the earliest appt. available for such testing. I have told my parents that they need to push my brother to get the testing done sooner, don't waste any more time!
A little more info for the riffraff crew: I don't get along very well with this brother. He lives out of state and so I don't see him very often, and we rarely talk by phone. I've sent emails, but they mostly go unanswered. My mom has evidently taken some heat for answering his questions frankly, ie she has noticed some things about her grandson that just aren't as they should be. My bro asked her what she thought, but didn't like the answers she gave.

All that makes for a tough situation Keltic. Here's hoping for the best outcome.
