Posted: 05/26/03 - 11:26 Post subject: my madison race report!
Well, I first must say that the entire weekend was a great success. I think everyone had a great time and it was nice being able to talk to several of you who weren't there via phone throughout the weekend.
My goal was a sub 2:00, but I told myself I'd be happy with sub 2:10. This was my first half mary as well, and I now realize I could have been a little better prepared, although I still think I ran the best I could have that day.
First half of the race was what killed me in the second. I started off much too fast - mainly because Tracy's sister found me and I tried to keep up with her as best I could. Around mile 3 my groin started to hurt a lot. I blame this on poor stretching prior to the race. Katie (Tracy's sister) was cruising. I finally had to let her go around the 7 mile mark. I was under an hour through the first half. I think I hit the wall around mile 9, and kept slipping. Both feet were burning and I was just exhausted. It felt like 90 degrees, but it was around 68. The sun took a lot out of me as well.
I walked a little bit of every mile after the 9th mile. I've never been in such pain during a run evah. First cramps came on with about a mile and a half to go - in my quads. I kept pushing though.
Final sprint - I always push myself at the finish. Felt good, until the last 200 yards or so - cramps in both calves at once! Limping on one leg is one thing, but two? That's tough.
Crossed the line at 2:06:10. Not bad, considering how I felt. Despite the struggle, it was a beautiful course and fun running with everyone!
Congratulations to everyone else. Can't wait to do it again soon!!!
Rando

Wow, Randy! Way to push yourself to the end. I hope you are not hurting too badly today.
Was it all worth it to cross the finish line and get your medal?

If that's what you look like nursing a groin injury, I'd say you're one tough 'mutha'!
Way to go man. You did great and I'm proud of ya!

Thanks for all the work you put in to making this get together such a great time. Good job on your half as well. It always gets easier after you have the first one behind you and you did a very good job on this one even though you didn't quite let on about the hills. I had a great time meeting everyone. Hopefully we can hook up at a few more races this year still.

Excellent race, Randy! I really wish I could have been there, too.
Half Mary is a fun distance, isn't it?

this is a great distance, and now that you know what to expect, you're goal will be easier...
i felt the heat in the 10k and mentioned to joel that i was very glad that i wasn't any further since I don't tolerate the heat well...so I know that it had an effect on the half and full marathoners...
nice to meet you, wish we could've spent more time with you and group but I get the feeling will have another chance...
