Posted: 05/25/03 - 12:05 Post subject: my madison race report!
Here are the posted stats: This goes to show how much a runner can slow down the last half of a race. On mile 9, I was at 1:17:57, which is an 8:33 pace. By the end, my chip time was 1:57:44, a 9:01 pace. I had a great time!!!! Thanks every one for your kind words. Shelly
It was fantastic! I'm not thrilled with my time, 1:58...around that...official times will be posted later in the day, but this was my first half and I got to share my experience with a bunch of new friends!
I started the race mentally thinking of it as a training run. I still started out too fast. My frist two miles I was at 16:14:62. But I was feeling fantastic. I keep running and running and think...haven't I passed mile three. Somehow, I ended up missing mile markers and annoyed other runners by saying: um, do you know what mile we're on. So, I feel awesome and am doing awesome...until mile 8. I decided to walk the gatorade station and drink. I did that the next time I passed a water station too.
I'm not so sure I should have done that because I lost my little group. By mile 10, I kept saying: only a 5K only a 5K left. I had SLOWWWED WAAAAAY down. I was on track for under 9 until mile 10. It's like something really bad happened to my legs...like I couldn't make them move faster. Then mile 12.5, a volunteer says: a half mile and you're HOME FREE!!!! And there was this little voice in my head that said: I can't. and people were passing my like crazy. But then a huge crowd was around me, an audience, and I hear Genie yell: Go Shelly....and I raced it in. I really did. I don't know how I did, but I surged past the girl I wanted to pass (just to be passed by her right at the end, gosh darn it) and was done with my first half.
I want to say that this has been an enjoyable and memorable experience. CJ, JRJO, TreyKay, EL, Randy, Ben,Shelfie, and Mega! Did I miss anyone? They had EXCELLENT races. Congrats, guys!!! And Genie, she's a great cheerleader.
Take care,
Shelly

Great job, and very cool race report. I'm terribly impressed. I love the half, and have never come close to your time. I can relate to the feeling towards then end where those blasted mile markers get farther, and farther away.
Excellent job, and I'm so glad you had such a great time.

Shelly, Big huge I hope everyone realizes what a racing junkie you're becoming. After convincing yourself and the rest of us it was a 10km weekend, you go and step back up to the halfM and proceed to give it a good kicking! Nice, nice race!!
