Posted: 01/08/03 - 00:31 Post subject: my little tiny marathon
Well, I'm now back into the running groove. As some of you might remember me telling, I had a quasi-hiatus from running for about 4 1/2 years. Finally got my butt out the door consistently this past year and did the Indianapolis Marathon back in October. And since I'm trying to do a marathon in every state, Florida was my next stop.
I'm trying to work my way back down to the 3:30 range, and had wanted to get a sub-4 for Tampa. But alas, was not to be.
The race starts in downtown Tampa and the first 8 miles go around Davis Island (a somewhat 'exclusive' neighborhood). Can't see any of it, because the race starts at 6 am and it's DARK! Although the sun came up over the bay while I was on the island.
After coming off the island, we go back through downtown (actually go over the finish line) and up to Ybor City, which is this really 'hip' place to be. Except on a Sunday morning when nobody is up.
Come back from Ybor back through downtown (actually go over the starting line), pass the halfway point and go down Bayshore Blvd, which has the longest continuous sidewalk in the world at just over 4 miles. Go past the Tampa Yacht Club and down along the bay to the 20 mile turnaround. Then back up Bayshore (yes, it's right along the water) to the finish line.
How'd I do? Not too bad for the first half. Was ripping out 8:30's and 8:40's, then had to hit the little blue house at the halfway point. Slowed down some, but still doing sub-9's, and a 9 or two, until mile 21. Something was going on with my thighs and we had to slow down. Way down.
Anyway, finished in 4:02:43, which is 22 minutes better than I did in Indpls.
So, I'm OK with the time (kinda) but realize that I need to incorporate some more weight training on the legs since they've seemed to 'give out' in the last few miles in these past two 'thons.
Places:
412/1005 overall
117/382 female
28/71 age group (same age group, just an older age by a week)
And as I mentioned in the other thread:
Water and Gatorade every mile starting at 1.5 miles
Cliff Shots starting at mile 14 and every mile or two after.
Port-a-potties everywhere! Every couple of miles there were a little cluster of them. And big clusters at both the start and finish lines.
My legs are sore and I'm not running this week, but I had a great time!

Way to go Mindy! If you keep dropping 22 minutes of each consecutive marathon, you'll be down to your goal in no time.

Great job. There's a whispering voice coming from somewhere urging me to run Tampa next year, and after that report I just may!

Such a vicarious rush I get from a marathon report, us runners are weird. You sure rock Mindy. 22-minutes in 3 months is tremendous!! Climbin' the ranks. What's next on '03 triple crown?

NICE Job FLARUNNER!
Great to hear you are really pleased with your results. When I was running the Jax marathon I saw a guy with a Shirt that said 50 states 50 Marathons! SO good luck in your quest.
I might have to think about making the trip down there some time and try it out.
