Posted: 05/19/03 - 14:00 Post subject: my first race is this Saturday
I had sort of hoped to run it alone, but somehow I have two sisters and a sister's best friend coming with me. Any tips? I know, I won't wear the event t-shirt the day of the race and I'll stand waaay in the back at the start.

Pin your number to your front.
Double-knot your shoelaces!
And if you're going to throw elbows, do it discretely.

Try not to let your adrenalin get the best of you and take off like a jackrabbit. It's the best way to burn out too early. I speak from experience.
I like to start in the back, but not because I'll get in everyone's way. I like the psychological effect of never having anyone pass me.
Just run your own race, and have fun.
Oh yeah, and ditto what sandy said about throwin' elbows.

Be sure to hydrate
pee before the race.
Bring warm stuff to wear when you are finished.
Don't try anything new to eat or drink on friday night or saturday morning.
Don't wear shoes that you have not worn (i.e. New Shoes).
Lay out all your stuff the night before (race number and/or chip)
p.m. me with any questions.

Big Fat
good luck, but you really can't miss with the fish
use all those bib pins - don't want that bib flappin' up in yo'face when you are cruisin' along.
have fun and post quickly after the race.

Go to the bathroom before the race (do #1 and more importantly #2)
Hydrate
Arrive at the race site at least half hour before it starts in order to do any
important last pre-race activities
Warmup and stretch before the race
Don't get too hyped up- it's ok to feel a little nervous but don't let it take control of you
More importantly have a Blast and good luck!

When the gun goes off yell
"I've been shot" and fall down.
Race organizers always love that one.

Don't drink the entire water bottle that you brought with you right before the race. uhm... I know someone who did that and didn't take the time to find the portapotties.
Take a moment to take it all in... before the race at the starting line... throughout the race and at the finish.
Have tons 'o fun!!!

Tap people on the left shoulder as you pass them on the right. If they fall for it, giggle!
