I drove a 10 year old autistic girl to school today. What an experience. I've heard autistic children described as 'kids behind walls' and that's pretty accurate.

I used to work with a little boy named Jake. He was for the most part uncommunicative except for regurgitated phrases from television ads. He was pretty manageable unless someone said "Big Bird"...then he was like...out there...for the rest of the day.

My 6 year old niece is high functioning autistic. Spending time with her is quite interesting (and entertaining) as she certainly sees things differently than most. She's really quite charming - she gets that from our side of the family.

My step son is also a high-functioning autistic. I'm not a very patient person so it is somewhat difficult for me at times.

This little girl was not very verbal; maybe one or two words. She has some physical handicaps, but just amazing to be around. She is very social for an autistic child and likes to be around people; she had never met me before this morning. Her mom was desperate since the bussing hadn't been set up yet and needed to get her to school. She is the older sister of a little girl I just started looking after.
Imagine single mom with four daughters, the third of which is autistic. There but for the grace of God go I.
Edited to add: By that final sentence I meant this mom has a lot on her plate with just four kids, not that having an autistic child is a curse or a burden.

It's amazing getting to see the world from other people's perspectives. As soon as cross- country is over, I am going to start volunteering to work with pre-school age kids with disabilities.
