I got it for my birthday this year (so, 8 months ago) and it just futzed out earlier today. Here's a newsflash: Its really tough to use your computer when you can't see what you are doing. I went to borrow a friend's monitor, hooked it up (I'm using it now) and yep, it was the monitor alright because this one is working fine. Which is good news, because my dad was like "what if its your video card?" which, sounds really scary. Sometimes I really hate computers.
So, the first one to find me the cheapest flat screen wins. Wins what, I'm not sure, but you'll be the big winner. Do you think my family will accept gifts this year of "A donation was made in your name towards the pfff goes to college computer fund"? 
Another newsflash: going back to an old school ginormous non-flat screen is weird/fubby after using a flat screen for so long.

TigerDirect.com usually has a 17" flat screen for around $170 after rebate., 19" is usually $199.

and, what are the vital signs of a monitor? is there any last ditch way to make it work? test it? Otherwise I'm giving it to my photographer uncle for a prop.

my cable guy did some kind of test to see if it was the monitor  is it a dell? dell replaced ours n/c when it went black within the warranty period. they were really excellent about the whole deal.
soooo, how long are flat screens lasting these days?

PS your monitor should still be under warranty if you got it new. Most monitors come with at least 1 yr. warranty.
