Posted: 07/31/05 - 14:36 Post subject: my bestest friend bought a road bike!
...And she just called to tell me she fell off it twice and skinned bother her knees. We went to Fresh Air to buy a running hat for her yesterday and she ended spending $2g on a sweet little used Trek 2300, Ultegra everything, with 650cm wheelset. Somehow the salesman talked her into clipless right off the bat and while she was practicing in her driveway at home she fell and banged up both her knees. She doesn't sound discouraged though, so that's a good thing. She said she needs a new helmet so she's going to go in and show the guy who sold her the bike her knees and tell him she needs a steep discount on a reeeaaalllly good helmet.
I was all for starting her in my old pedals and toeclips, but she went all out yesterday. I can't wait to be able to ride with her!

Helmets are over-rated. Her head will get harder as time goes on. Bone is a lot stronger than that $100 foam and plastic get up.

When I got my first pair of clipless pedals, I practiced leaning against the garage wall.

They have a trainer at home, so she could even do it in front of the TV. She said she had been riding around in the back yard on the grass but was getting pretty good and feeling confident when she decided to go out into the driveway.
She said both times she fell she came to a stop and realized too late she hadn't unclipped. It's that panic reaction where you just want to move your foot off the pedal but forget to twist out. I remember that feeling oh so well from my mountain biking days.
She was so cute when she was test riding it in the parking lot of the bike store. She rode around in circles for a long time and I was thinking 'boy she must really like that bike' but then when she came in to stop she had that look on and I realized she hadn't been able to get out of her pedals all that time. I caught her by the handlebars so she wouldn't crash.

I assaulted the young Aussie guy who was selling us the bike yesterday because he quoted Dodgeball. One minute he's standing there making a sale, the next he's being hugged violently by a busty redhead in a bright pink minidress. His reaction was somewhere between and and .
Keep in mind this is the same bike shop where I bellow out 'HI HONEY I'M HOME!!!" when I walk in the door there. They must just love me.

i call the bike after she dies or ends up paralysed (i'll also settle for any lesser debilitating injuries).

in all seriousness - good call on the helmet discount.
my dad practiced the toe clip thing in our hallway - he had his hand against the wall and practiced clipping in and out for awhile until he got the hang of it.
and of course you'll fall the first time you actually need to stop...
and probably once again the next season... always forget the clips.
good luck to her. i wish i had the time to do nothing but run, bike, and exercise in general.

Here's a quote from an email bicycling (no, not recumbent, i know what you're thinkin'), regarding a fatality in a bike tour last week....
| Quote: | They are not sure there was an actual collision or if the man just
fell. A story that I got from another Tour Leader was that someone on the
other side of the road (there were riders traveling both ways on this
portion of the route) shouted at the man and he looked up.
Whatever the immediate cause, this would have been a routine fall (if
there is such a thing) except for one thing), the man's helmet came off
and he hit his head on the pavement. No one knows why. It may have been unfastened, broken, defective, or whatever. |
..scary...DOA as reported on the Wobegon news.
