Posted: 10/01/02 - 10:03 Post subject: my Twin Cities Marathon
After reading Mega's report this isn't gonna be very impressive.
Mrs. Coach and I woke up early on Sat (5:15am) to drive up to St. Paul. (We won the homecoming game friday night, BTW) Pretty uneventful trip and we got there @ 11:30 am.
Met Mega, Camelia, and family at the expo. They are very nice people. Mega and I looked around for jrjo, but couldn't spot him.
Sunday the weather was absolutely perfect. perfect temp, little wind, overcast, it was beautiful. I did see Mega at the start line and wished him good luck, he seemed ready to go.
I lined up with the 3:30 pace group. I wanted to finish @ this pace. I had run a 3:36 in my first marathon, and with a much more rigorous and successful training program, I was confident. I felt GREAT.
I felt good running with the group, I wasn't tired, didn't hurt, and we were just clicking along just a little ahead of pace. We hit the 1/2 marathon point @ 1:44:34, just about exactly where you want to be.
At mile 14, my thighs told me they were a little tired. This is when I know to "ease back" . So I immediately slowed my pace a little. Probably wouldn't get 3:30, but I could still get a PR if I worked through this "tough patch". I ran this mile in 8:47. Did the next mile in about the same pace.
I wasn't getting better. In fact, my left thigh started cramping about 30 seconds after passing the 16 mile mark. It hurt and it slowed me some. By mile 18 both thighs were cramping, and @ mile 19 my right calf joined in too! I started walking at this point, although to be honest, what I was doing could hardly be called "running" anymore.
At mile 20 my left calf went too! I was in severe pain. I would walk for a minute or two, until the cramps left, then run until I couldn't run anymore, then walk again. It was ugly.
By mile 22 I was hurting so bad I felt like crying. Everytime I had to stop and walk, (which was every 2 or 3 minutes at this point) I was swearing to myself. I hope no "young ears" heard me.
Anyway, I finished. That's about all I can say. My last 4 or 5 miles took like 12 minutes a piece.
Put it this way My first half marathon was 1:44, last 10K was 1:12:54.
So that's my report, I'm gonna post some other thoughts and things on the race later, since it doesn't really affect the actual race report.

OUCH. sounds like you went through HELL and you made it out, Coach! First off, congrats on persevering through it! I know alot of folks may not have made it through what you went through, so kudos!
Second off, you did it! You made it. You're the man, now step back and buttslap yourself !!
And thanks for the generous contribution to the Mafia Mileage Fund!
