i'd like to make 500 million dollars, and then give nearly all of it away (rockefeller style).

i'm completely against gold office doors, and personal jets. i think they're excessive, but my dad argues that it isn't.

there's nothing wrong with making money, but living for it is a problem. my girlfriend is moderately concerned about how much me and my father debate money/business.

i'm just competitive. in the game of life i figure if i love what i do, and i don't sacrifice my happiness (or my familys happiness) then go get your cash. kinda like shooting hoops to see how many you can get.

but personally my biggest fear is not being able to provide for my family. i'd like to live comfortably, but i don't crave lavish things. i don't ever need a million dollar house or anything like that.

i'd like to keep my feet on the ground and just make a killing. i'd like to make a lot of money, i don't *need* a whole lot of money. but it'd be nice to have it.

there isn't anything wrong with making $500 million is there?

Nope. There isn't nothing wrong at all for not wanting the $500M. You are at an age where your are realistically looking at your future and what you want to see happen in your life.

Being able to provide for you and your future family is something to shoot for. It's one huge accomplishment if you can do just that and know you worked hard to make it. Work hard and take small steps. Be diligent, set goals and make sure you have your very best friend by your side.

I hope we can see where you go next on your journey in life. It'll be neat to hear about your first home...wife...family...even without $500M

It's coming...very soon. Wink

I think the trick is learning to live within your means, whatever your means are. Most people don't, and many people have a good deal of credit card debt. That's the trap I wish we'd stayed out of, and it's one we DID get out of before we bought our house but here we are again, about $20K in debt if you count the Jeep, but about $10k just in the plastic. I'm getting us a home equity loan and we'll go from 8% on the Jeep and 19.9% on the cards to a nice 5.75% total for the first year or so, until prime goes up.

There isn't anything wrong with making money, and wanting lots of it, but agreed that it cannot be something you "live for" so much. We make a comfortable living for the most part, where John is able to support all of us. I will say that I am longing for the time when I am working as well and we are making $100K plus, combined. I have a great dream about paying off my student loans and this house within 7 years of my working full-time. The plan is to continue to live on his income, and put all of my earnings towards those two things. Of course, this is my dream; won't necessarily be a reality. Something to work for, in any case.

Good luck to you. Being able to take care of one's family is such a nice thing. John works hard, and I know he takes great pride in being able to provide for us. You will have that same feeling. Smile

yeah i'm big on living in my means. i don't want extravagance. y'know?

as for debt, i'm staying the hell away from credit cards right now. the last thing i want is to owe people money, but i understand that theres a healthy balance between hanging onto some of your cash vs. putting it all up front.

either way i dunno. i always said i wanted to make a few hundred thousand a year, the 500 million is more or less just a joke, but i'd like to do it if i could do it happily.

anyhoo. maybe i'll focus on computer class...

You're a smart guy blue. Money won't buy you love, happiness or health. But having more than you need will make life a lot easier for you and the folks whom you choose to bestow your excess upon. There's absolutely nothing wrong with making $500M. Go for it.

the general consensus is that money is a bad thing when you neglect your happiness/health (or turn into mr. burns).

but why keep making money if you can live comfy on 100K a year? why make more?
