Is black still the way to go, or can one wear a muted shade these days? I have a plain black dress, but I really want to celebrate this friend's life more than mourn his passing. I have a dove grey dress with matching sweater that I could wear but it's quite sleek and dressy. I don't know what to do!! I just feel like black isn't right for the way I feel.

I think that would be fine. Old timey traditionalists in the immediate family would prolly wear black, but the last couple I was to, people wore black, black and white, or other muted stuff.

I think that even to celebrate this great person, you shouldn't wear something really bright, like hot pink, only b/c some people might take offense.
But I think subtle shades are fine. And I'm sorry for your loss.

For my father's funeral, my mother wore light colors. I have cousins in the construction business, they showed up in their work clothes which were already a little dirty. We didn't care. It meant a whole lot more that they were there than what they were wearing. There were a lot of people at my Dad's funeral, and I can't tell you what a single person wore, only that they were there.

What would your friend want you to wear?
I think you'll be just fine. You strike me as one of good taste and refinement, so you can't go wrong.
And I, too, am sorry for your loss...

Brown should be fine.
Black is slowly making it's way out for funerals and muted colors are more the norm.
I'm sorry, chicky. It sucks that there is one less sweet old man in the world.
And in future y'all, you heard it hear first. At my funeral you all wear jeans and t-shirts, eat badly, and dance til dawn. Understood??

Mr. Go made me promise that at the viewing and the wake, everyone is to wear Hawaiian shirts. Also, he wants to have both of those catered.

I dress in a way that would be comforting to the survivors (if they even notice). If they are known to be traditional, by all means consider wearing something somber no matter the color. If they will celebrate a life well-lived, perhaps they would enjoy more fanciful attire.
