In small races it's easy---I line up in front. I run into problems with fairly large 10ks. I have to admit that I line up higher than my race time. Most of the guys that I line up with, will beat me by a good minute. This is how I justify it: I am a quick starter and I will probably place. I've never had any negative feedback regarding this. In fact, maybe the opposite. I've lined up with guys that ARE my same pace that will nudge me in front of them.

At marathons......I like to line up by pace....even if I think I'll place high....I line up by my pace. However, I did this at Grandma's marathon last summer......only to find that the 3 hour corral was filled with 4 hour people......so I scooted up to 2:50......and I saw alot of 3:20 wristbands??????
