We have a joint account for bills and family money, and joint savings as well. I also have my own savings, as does Larry. I trust him with everything, but I lost too much in my first marriage monetarily to ever leave all of my money in one place. I was an idiot and left everything, including credit cards, in joint accounts. I got screwed.
I also still have my 401K which is not to be touched until retirement. But it is there. We both know about all of each other's finances.

Everything's put in the same account, and I handle all the money. It's easier that way. If he wants to spend money he tells me he's going to spend it and I allow for that in the budget. I pay the bills, manage the savings, and spend whatever I want he never had a problem with that.

Cheryl,
Back in our pre-kid days in TX we had a really organized formula where we would divide a portion of our income for bills and keep the rest in two personal checking accounts and then had joint savings.
Now that Go is in Law School and we have two kids that take up most of our income anyway that just seems like too much effort, we just dump it into one account and watch it magically disappear!!!
We do keep joint savings still.
The bummer of this arrangement always comes at gift giving time, however. If you ask for or otherwise receive an extravagant gift from your spouse, you can't get past knowing that you're ultimately paying for it

everything's in both names. no hidden cash or debts. it's all on the table, believe me. i have to sign off on his bonus, whenever there is one, cuz he has always taken it in stock. so, nowhere to run or hide there.
funny, we don't fit the norm i guess. we never discuss, let alone argue about, money.
i can not even imagine how one would hide debt or income from their s.o.
those would NOT be model relationships i'm guessing.

I have a mad money account that I squirrel away funds into, but he's aware of it. He's just not aware of just exactly how much is in there or how I got the money to put in there, he trusts me.
We'd had our fair share of arguments about money and some of it includes his not being entirely truthful by telling me only what I need to know or just part of it. Infuriates me. The house, the credit card, the airplane, and our nest egg are all in his name. I knew this and I"m ok with it.
He screws up the finances and we lose the house and the airplane, it's not my name on it.
We have a joint checking account and our salaries have never been kept quiet. He has told me his bonuses were smaller than they actually were so he could put it in the nest egg. That infuriated me too.

Airplane?! Hey, can you do some 'shuttling' for the next riff-raff get together? The airport is just down street here.

The other part of the equation I should probably provide is that our winter bonuses are 36% of our annual salary. QUITE A BIT to hide from a spouse I should say.

I don't make that much money, but a 36% bonus would be huge!

Is your company hiring? All I get is a crappy 50$ gift card for Wal-Mart.

to clarify, it was sort of like this.
"cheryl, would you like this job? We'll pay you $10 a year."
"sure! That is great, just right at the minimum of what I could live on in a year"
"okay, now that you are hired, we really pay you $6.40 a year, and if you're really lucky we'll give you the rest of your salary as a bonus. What? $6.40 is really too little to live on? Well remember, the rest is just a bonus, its not guaranteed. You want it? Beg for it. How bad do you want that $3.60? Would you cry for it?"
you get the idea. I work a one messed up place.

Man, I wish my husband got that instead of $50 and a turkey!
The Airplane is a 1979 Cessna 152. He loves to fly it. He'd happily shuttle anyone (assuming it's not already rented and he has the time).
We paid less for the airplane than we did for my Jeep. Maintenance is a lot more, but with the rental income it almost breaks even. It makes him happy, so whatever.
