well, I've had a pretty pathetic spring running wise.

last year at this time, I was closing in on 600 miles for the year...right now I'm barely at a 1/3 of that figure for 2003...

So I was hoping a meeting with the riff-raff bunch would help in the motivation dept...and decided a week or ago to run the 10k just to get a good run in and also get a good idea of where I'm at conditioning wise.

Joel decided to run with me and I promised Joy that I'd 'rein' him in so he wouldn't damage his injured foot by running too hard..

We started the race towards the back of the pack, trying to get ahead of the 5k walkers....I didn't want to start too quickly, because I knew my conditioning wouldn't allow for any pacing mistakes early. We may have started a little too conservatively since the first 1/2 mile or so was on a downhill grade....

the splits were in KMs (i thought that they'd also offer mile splits so I didn't take any) which threw me off a bit, although I easily made the conversion to miles, I tend to think in terms of miles not kms...we hit the 5k mark at 27 and change and then hit a moderate uphill...we both took it pretty easy up the hill but by mile 4 I was feeling it a bit and told Joel to go ahead if he wanted to, he said no (i think he was just afraid I'd catch him Wink ) that he'd stay with me...so we slowed a bit between 4 and 5 but then picked it up a bit and then kicked it home. As we entered the finish area we saw Genie and Joy cheering for us and then a little further down spotted Amy, her sister and my kids...that was fun seeing them..

I had a good time chatting with Joel and it definitely made the run easier having somebody to share it with...

I finished in 55:03 chip time, which I think was about a 20-30 second negative split....so while this is a good 3-4 minutes slower then I should be running but this race was fun and actually one of the most satisfying that I've had in a long time...

what's next? not sure what the summer holds...I need to bring my miles up...there is a low key local 10k at the end of august that i'd like to run just to see how much I can shave off of this run over the course of a solid summer of training...and who knows if things go well...maybe white rock will be a calling...

(my biggest regret of the weekend is not being able to spend enough time with the riff-raffers but we had a wonderful time with CB's sister....madison is a wonderful place)!

It was great to see you and CB again. Thanks for coming up and running with us and for keeping Joel under control during his race. Hopefully i'll see you guys again this year.

Glad you enjoyed your 10k. I think it's more important to feel good about a race and enjoy it sometimes, than it is to PR. There's no sense running if you aren't having fun. (spoken like a true slow person Smile )

Hope that gave you the motivation you need!

Great job, Mega! an aside: I was a bit worried as i saw him sipping that coffee MINUTES before his race......hmmmm.....as I dashed to the bathroom for the umpteenth time that morning....only having drunk a glass of water when I got up.

Good luck with your future races this summer.

Good Job-Hopefully this race gave you the motivation you needed to go in the direction you want to go in this summer. Very nice of you to keep Joel on target so he wouldn't get hurt!

Great race, Jerry! And you thought you'd be running 10 minute miles!?!

Thanks for not telling anyone about the time I broke down and cried at mile 2, 3, 4, and 5.... Neutral

Did you really type White Rock? Right out where all us nagging 'motivators' can read it? Wink
Hope you're back in the groove. It was a great running day.

Sounds like you had a great time! fubby

However, Joel alleges you did NOT cross the finish line holding hands. I'd like to hear your side of the story?

Yeah baby!!! Thinkin' DALLAS!!!!!!!

Good job on the race, Jerry....every now and then it's nice to run with no pressure and just enjoy it (although my slow butt would have been happy with a 55 10K Embarassed ). Hopefully it was the motivation you needed. It was great to see you guys and I'm bummed we didn't get to see more of you two but I'm glad you had fun!

See you in Dallas.... Twisted Evil
