What 's a good number to try to stay under, fat grams per day-wise? I seem to recall 35 grams/day being a magic number.

That seems kind of low for a 2000 cal / day diet. That only works out to 15% of your calories from fat.

Don't worry about the overall # of fat grams per se, but the percentage of calories you eat that come from fat. If you keep it under 30% you should be OK.
But then, my opinion probably means nothing with my crazy diet.

I agree with the 30% rule. I have found that if I eat reasonable well and avoid fast foods, I can easily stay under 25%. I was staying at 15% for a while (very little meat and no red meat) but that was tough.

But if you did do chips and they fell on the ground, would you eat them?

Yes, and you can pick your teeth with the tail.
