Posted: 11/04/04 - 13:03 Post subject: letters of recommendation
I hate them. I really hate asking for them. A lot.
so. I'm going to nursing school next fall. Yada yada yada. One program I am applying to (sort of my 'backup' school) is requiring 3 LORs. No other program is requiring this. Seriously, is this med school? (well, this school is a med school...but...) Anyway, I just emailed my favorite prof I've had in recent years to see if A) he remembers me B) he'd be willing (I think so, he offered while I was in the class). Okay, assuming he will, I still need 2 more. Who wants to write a letter for me!!!
Seriously though, I'm either going to have to con a coworker into doing it (and it will be unrelated to healthcare as I'm currently in finance) and keeping their mouth shut about it (since no one official knows I have one foot out the door) and/or I'm going to have to start digging up names of very random professors from semesters long past. Ideas? And if i do dig up someone, what are the courtesies of this? Do I give them a mini summary of my resume and grades so they at least 'know' a little about me to write about? Obviously a thank you after is in order. I hate this. Does it really matter? Like someone is going to have bad letters that would tip the scales against admitting them. Ugh. Maybe my mom will write me a decent letter of rec. kidding. sort of.

I'll write you one, but it probably won't be very reputable.

I'd suggest an academic, a colleague (I'd say boss, but that's not an option for you), an underling (if you've had one, if not a 2nd academic).

Look at places in which you've been civically engaged--did you volunteer somewhere?

I thought of this, I volunteered with children at one of the hospitals but I was one of like a thousand volunteers...no one really knows me personally there. I probably should have volunteered more. You know, in my "spare" time...

I personally think letters of recommendation, when requested by the subject matter, are a pointless waste of several people's time.
How about a supervisor from a prior job?

Dear Nursing School:
Pffff ran a marathon.
More important, she finished.
Regards,
g-dawg
P.S. She plays well with others. Or so I've been told.

Would someone at work automatically know that you're leaving to go to school? Can you not tell them it's part time, like you're doing now, or don't they even know you're going to school now? You can always play dumb once you get in and tell them the program requires you to quit or something, no?
BTW, I have to get three just for an internship, which is a requirement of my degree.

My job discourages education. No joke. An interview question (which my recruiter warned me about thankfully) was "are you interested in furthering your education?" and the correct answer is "no". I'm telling you, this place is wack. To put it mildly.

Btw it would help me out a lot if in these helpful recs you could say something about being able to multi task and being very driven. I want into the accelerated program. I'm thinking "Pfff is good at drinking beers really fast while also talking and taking pictures." Something like that.

How useful!!
Boy, remind me to have you guys write my recs next time I'm job hunting. But on mine be sure to include that I can drink beer!
Seriously Cheryl, go for a combo of relevance of 1. your job history, 2. your academic history, and 3. something in the field you're trying to get into if it's not well covered in items 1 and 2.

Dear Nursing School,
Pfffff now has dependable transportation since the sty, so she won't miss class. You can even call her and ask because she also got rid of the bag phone.
Trust all is well,
Alan
