Posted: 03/03/03 - 15:36 Post subject: let's talk about our weekends
mine was okay.
On Friday night we locked up a very intoxicated beligerent female that took 3 of us to get in custody and in the car. She was hooting and hollering in the station for a while and though eventually settled down, never went to sleep.
I slept awful during the day Saturday but had a great hill workout in the afternoon.
Saturday night work was pretty uneventful
Slept great on Sunday.
We saw some training videos on racial profiling and the Rodney King incident (unedited footage and pretty comprehensive interviews with all involved parties)
The roads were very icy this morning which meant a lot of accidents as we were ready to leave this morning. It also made the drive home interesting.

Didn't get to ride as much as I wanted to. Saturday was drizzly all day.
Other than running, riding, lifting and church, I'm not sure where the rest of my weekend went.

Well I had the most awesome weekend . Thats the short version.
Below is the long version .
It is a 3 hour drive to Taupo, and I left home about the same time the competitors were entering the water. I found a park about half a mile from race headquarters, which I thought was pretty good even though it meant quite a haul to carry my table and other supplies across to the marquee. I discovered that the 60 therapists were housed with the medical staff, and the athletes café, in a secure area right beside the finish line. After introducing myself to some of the other therapists and setting up my table, I headed off to my motel as we didn’t have to be back until 1.45pm for a briefing. While there I also discovered that we had been allocated parking right outside the tent .
My motel which was located close to race headquarters and on the race route itself. I joined my hosts Sue and Barry (I’ve stayed at this motel a number of times so know the hosts well) on the roadside, along with the families of the competitors who were also staying there, and we spent several hours cheering and collecting water bottles off the road.
I went back early for my briefing, and spent some time around the central part of the course, catching up with a number of friends along the way. One group of tri friends were trying to persuade me that I really could learn to swim properly and train for Ironman 2004 with them – I think not! I am hopeful that I’ve bribed my way out of that one by offering to be their official personal team therapist instead .
After briefing, we all went out to cheer Cam Brown in for this third Ironman NZ victory – it was great as our crew shirts seemed to give us access to everywhere, even the finish zone! I had a quick chat with Cam’s wife whom I know, and then hung around and waited until the rest of the competitors started to roll in. Most were in pretty good shape considering, although a few were cramping up over the finish line.
Before long we were really busy, and it stayed that way until about 10pm. Competitors were weighed and checked by medical before we got them, so I guess we didn’t see the worst cases, but we still had a few collapsers and cramp was common. Some of the competitors calves looked like they were full of squirming worms . I had to call the medics for a couple of the people I worked on, and I detoured another couple there on the way out who were looking like they were going into shock – not uncommon after this kind of event.
I worked on a real variety of people, all shapes and sizes, and across all age groups - mostly Americans. I’ve never been called “a real doll” so many times before, one wanted to hire me, and one thought he might like to marry me. Heh heh, the power of massage on a vulnerable mind and body . They were all so kind, saying how nice and friendly the kiwis were, and how well organised the event was. I only had one (an Australian) who was quite indifferent and treated me like a slave .
I took a few breaks throughout the evening, going out to the finish line to cheer people in, and to take some photos. About 11.30 we only had a few on tables so I went out and joined in the party. The finish area was one huge party all night, and Mike Reid the lead commentator was doing a great job of keeping everyone hyped and entertained. The last competitor came in before the midnight close off, but we all stayed to cheer in the 66 year old Japanese lady who missed cut off by 7 mins. Her 70 year old husband had finished earlier, and he was there to greet her. She was really confused as there was this enormous reception for her and yet she could see she was outside the time. It was kind of bittersweet really.
We stayed and had a few drinks in the marquee, then I headed off to a couple of bars with some of the other therapists. However I think my crowded bar days are well and truly over so I left them to it, and made the mistake of detouring through the marquee on the way back to my car. Hhmm, it was past 3am by the time I got back to my motel .
But the best thing is that at some stage during the night, I had an overwhelming and defining moment where I realised that I was doing what I really loved and that come what may, I had made the right choice to chase some rainbows and follow the dream .

My weekend started out with 4 hrs of sleep for Saturday. I got up and drove to Indy to judge a contest for Business Professionals of America. I stayed for the general session at the end of the day. As I was driving back to campus, I hit the ONLY patch of snow in Indiana. In no time, I could not see 5 feet in front of my truck. The lanes disappeared under a blanket of white. Traffic slowed to 30MPH on the interstate and I saw a truck spin out into the median. I finally got back around midnight Sunday morning.
I was up by 5:20am to finish a presentation I had later Sunday. I had two presentations on Sunday. Between the two days, I only had enough time to get two meals.
Now for the good parts of the weekend.
While at the BPA contest, the students were really excited to be there. It seemed that they enjoyed the motivational speaker that evening.
On Sunday, the presentations were regarding my trip to Haiti. Both presentations went very well. We got a lot of people to sign cards to encourage our senators and representatives to allow money to be sent to the government of Haiti. We were also asked to make our presentation for a 5th grade group next week. I think it is great to be teaching the kids about service work before they are influenced by the general society.
