Posted: 01/30/04 - 13:09 Post subject: ladies...hairdresser question
Ok, I'm breaking up with my dude. I'm in a rut, he's not very open to new ideas, my color is looking crappy and it's just time to move on. Plus he's weird and smells sometimes.
So, I've made an apt. with a gal that several of my friends go to. Pluses, she's supposedly great with cut and color, she's very reasonably priced, my friends love her and their hair looks great. Minuses, her salon is 30 minutes away (as opposed to my old place that is 5 min. away) and she's really hard to get an apt. with, so basically you have to make one for the next time as you leave, there's probably a 5 week waiting period. My fear about that is things may come up with babysitters, etc. that I'd have to cancel and then wait forever.
On the other side, I just got my nails done at a new salon and while there talked to a cute gal there about my hair. She seemed to have a good eye, she could see what has been going wrong with it and seemed open to new ideas and to give me some of her ideas as well. She was just really cute and I could see liking her. But I've never seen hair she's done, so who knows, maybe she's a freak. But, that salon is close as well, 5 min. away, her prices are comparable to where I go now and the other lady my friends go to, and it's not as hard to get an apt with her. I'm just a little scared to try someone without any recommendation, but leaning towards going to her.....
I can't decide who to go to, what would you ladies do???? My apt. with the far away but great lady isn't until the 24th, but I'm already dying to get something done and know I could go to the close lady next week.....my one other concern is that if I don't like her and still go to that salon to get my nails done I'll feel all weird (that's happened before with me and it's very uncomfortable).
HELP!!!!!

If you don't like the way she cuts your hair, next time you can just say something like..."Oh, yeah it was a spontaneous thing, I HAD TO GET MY HAIR CUT, but no one's doing my nails but you."

Oh, it's not the same lady. There's a nail lady and a haircutter, it's just seeing the hair lady when I go there to get my nails done that I'd worry about....but maybe the hair lady would be great and I'd keep going to her so there wouldn't be a problem.
Uggg, these tough decisions in life....

You need to ask a prissy, fussy chick, which I'm not. I just go get it cut whenever, wherever. Reminds me, it's been since November, probably should get it cut ....

Do you know anyone who has had her hair cut by the lady close to your house? How long has she been a hairdresser? If brand new I'd stay away. But if it's been years I'd imagine she'd be ok. The hairdresser that is 30 min away sounds like a sure thing. If she's that booked she had alot of happy clients so you know she'd do a good job.
Me-I'm getting a hair cut tonight by a girl we run with. My hairdresser moved and I was so happy I knew someone I could trust. It's been since Nov for me too.

My instinct is to go with the girl 30 minutes away...she's a sure thing. The other girl could be a complete flake, then you have that whole awkward encounter thing. Of course, you could try her and then find a new nail girl...I feel your pain though, it took me 8 months, 6 people, and a mullet to find a decent hair person here.

Sorry I can't help. I just walked in to a quickie place on Sunday on the spur of the moment to get it cut. Usually I just tell them to do whatever they think would look good. Only once have I gotten a bad cut.
Sunday's cut is different and is taking some getting used to, but BC really seems to like it. So, I'll stick with it.
As for your situation: go with the sure thing. Your friends look good and are happy--make an evening appt for the next time when hubby can be home to watch the boy. I say go with your friends' recommendations first--then, if that doesn't work, try the close one.
Good luck!!

5 minutes beats 30. i'm always going for convenience first. but that's just me.
try the far away one first. i'm sure you'll get bored with that drive tho' i would.

I'd go for the sure thing, because Hair Is Important. Even though when I tell Marie to cut it, don't worry because I know it'll grow back. I LOVE my stylist, and she's 15 minutes away if there isn't traffic, 30 if there is. She's even offered to do the foil highlights here at my house, so I don't have to spend what I spend at the salon (it's just a Hair Cuttery, but damn, all their stylist have had their hands in my hair, and they all rock! Don't get me started on the price to foil long hair though, egads) I got so lucky, all on my own. You have proof that this gal can do what she can do, that's such a huge bonus in my book.
Once you get it colored, get some of that Redken color boost stuff, it rocks on my red hair, and they have it for all colors. It really adds some kick to the color.
Good luck. Oh, I'll be wanting before and after pics, btw.

Great thoughts gals! Thanks!!!! Looks like I should probably go with the sure thing....but man I'm dying. Can't believe I'll have to wait 3 weeks. My b-day is a week from today and I'm dying to get it done before my get together with friends, but I should probably just be calm and wait. My gut keeps telling me to wait and go with the sure thing, because she really does a great job on the friends that go there. I can always use the other girl as a back up if I do get tired of the drive thing (I know she's been doing hair years, so that's a good thing.).
But I will try to be patient until the 24th. Man...let's hurry this up.
And I may show you before and afters brie...we'll see how good the outcome is and if I feel back to my blond sassy self.

I'd be going to the "sure thing" person. However, I'm still not over losing Bobby, my former hairdresser/good friend from Ohio. Good hair people are hard to find.
