The neighbor has one she is thinking of breeding. She's a lovely dog and if she had puppies I may be interested. I had never heard of this breed though; I had to ask what she was.
Apparently they became all but extinct when Goldens took over the world.
They're black or dark brown, sort of the same coat as a Golden and more narrow, from what I can tell.

They're great dogs, typical of most retrievers. Definitely not as popular as their Lab and Golden cousins. Make sure your neighbor is a reputable breeder and has the parents checked out. The have a history of hip and elbow dysplasia.

Our flat-coated cousins are about the same size as us, and just a little bit lighter, weight-wise. They're great for either hunting purposes or as a family pet. But they do need to be outside a lot for exercise - they're not as easily adaptable to city life.
katt is right about the dysplasia, especially to the hip. Aside from that, they're very healthy dogs. And of course, get one if possible, from an established breeder (that goes for any dog you get that isn't from a rescue service).

We wish. If we do meet that goal (and trust us, we're working on it), no person on earth will have a proper pair of socks. And you'll find some of your underwear missing too.
