"Think of fruit as a condiment or a garnish rather than a snack. By using fruit in small amounts, you can enjoy your favorites yet manage portions easily: Dice that wedge of Granny Smith into a salad, or slice it thinly and sauté it in a little butter as a garnish for a pork chop. If you love grapes, halve a few and mix them into tuna or chicken salad. Stretch peaches by tossing them with red pepper and cilantro as a relish to serve over fish. "

Yup, from now on I'm smothering my apple a day in butter and serving it on a bed of pork.

These people must never poo. Ever.

Shannon:

I know you've made up your mind on Atkins but let me give a little of my experiences. Almost 30 years ago I lost 55 lbs with the Atkins program and managed to keep about 40 lbs off for a very long time (1990). I would like to state I was exercising very regularly (at least 4 days/week).

From 1990 to 2000 I gained too much weight. I tried several different "heathy" diets but none worked. Finally in 2000 I said I'm going back to Atkins it worked 25 years ago. It worked again. During the diet I increased my exercise to 5-6 days/week. At the end of four months I had lost about 55 lbs. I can now fit into the same Army Dress Blue Uniform I purchased in 1972. In my last physical my cholesterol was in the 130 range.

Yes, in the first two weeks you do eat lots of high protein foods, but you also cut out the processed sugars, all those empty carbs and generally eat healthier than you did before. Instgead you eat things like broccoli, asparagus, salad. After the first two weeks you slowly re introduce barbs.

Now... Atkins is NOT just bacon, steak, butter etc etc. Its turkey, salmon, chicken, salads, quite a few veggies. I continue to watch my carbs today, I try to minimize their intake. Do I cut them out completely ? No, not at all. Yes, I do eat cake on special occasions. Before a race I eat a Power Bar, and partake of the post race stuff.

Personally I don't see anything wrong with "dice that wedge of Granny Smith into a salad, or slice it thinly and sauté it in a little butter". Where does it say "smother" ? Nor do I see anthing wrong with "minimizing" carb intake. Personally, I know not watching my carb intake is bad for me. Despite exercising, I still have problems keeping weight off.

Recent clinical studies have shown the Atkins Diet does work. You may be one of the lucky people who can maintain their weight by simple exercise. I'll bet if you analyzed your diet you'd find you are taking in less carbs than the average person. Atkins helped me lose and continues to help me maintain my weight.

I think this is a major contributor too!
All I know is every Atkins devotee I know looks like crap and has to take wads of vitamins/laxatives daily because they're not getting what they need from their diet.
Yes, I do restrict starchy carbs like pasta and potatoes in an effort to lose weight. But no one is going to tell me not to eat fruit or carrots.

Yes the exercise played a part, but I honestly think the Atkins program was the major contributing factor. Remember, despite what I did, I did not lose weight until I went to the Atkins program.

Those people who don't look well and take all that stuff to help: they're probably on the "Induction Phase" for too long. Even then, there are PLENY of vegatables they can and should be eating.

Look, this debate will continue forever. Suffice it to say you will find "zealots" on either side of the issue and you're not going to change their opinions. I think it works, and followed correctly, is healthy. You do not. Nothing wrong with that, you're entitled to your opinion.

Make mine a crantini!
But a word to the wise. Don't eat the cranberries in the bottom of the glass. That is one fruit one should not go near, especially when drinking. They make for yucky sick tummy barfing in the bathtub kind of evenings.

WC Fields was of the opinion it was the cherries, olives and other stuff put into booze that gave you hangovers.

As for yucky sick tummy stuff - try beer until 0200 then Dunkin Donuts chocolate donuts...

Hang on...here I am!

I don't think I look like crap here after a 2:01:06 halfM (in Artic Freeze clothing).
The guy behind me does.

Let me finally get a word in here on the Adkin's program. I know that I will be very unpopular with my comments and views here. That's ok. For weeks I have held my tongue and let what everyone have their word with this diet. I've let it roll. However, I have not always agreed with what has been said, nor felt it was necessary to go against the RF gang.

I started the Adkin's program 20.Jan.03. I followed it religiously until July '03, limiting myself to 20 carb grams a day. I didn't have a problem with the diet and saw 30+ pounds come off my body that way. I have since adopted a lower carb diet due to choice...and to keep myself from falling back into old habits of eating the bad, processed carbs.

However, I have:
1) Felt great on this diet.
2) Always had energy to do things.
3) I really kicked up my training with my running on the diet.
4) I can run a halfM's without Gu's or Gels or Gatoraide
5) I've seen great results and look good! I've never looked like crap.
6) I have never taken one laxative or suppository to help me "get what I'm missing" from my diet.

I think it's all a matter of choice.
I think it gets "dogged" a lot and there has to be some truth to it.
I have a modified Adkin's approach now and can agree that carbs are needed . However, I do see how it works as well.

OK...I'm ready. Throw the bricks at me now.
You still like me though, don't ya?

Oh Marcie, a Capulet and I a Montague. From two different worlds combatting each other. If for not this war be waged in differnet camps we might have a different future.

Ok Marcie personally your "modified approach" is more acceptable than the total genocide of the carb. Any program that totally reccomends a total abolishment of ANY food is where i have issues. I think that the majority of the Adtkins fans like to focus on the hHigh protein and forget the rest of the diet and that might give you freaks Wink all a bad name.

i still stand by my line though. I never met a carb I didn't like. Mr. Green
