Posted: 02/01/06 - 16:41 Post subject: job as a teacher's assistant?
well the g/f has been telling me to look into this for about two weeks now. i was a bit skeptical - my brother went down, and got some more information (for a different school - but same position).
apparently there is a huge lack of dudes applying for this spots. it pays like $19 an hour, and you work 3 or 4 hours a day, and you can only work between 830 and 330 anyway. which is hella great for me to get research done and pick up a second job.
looks like i'll be checking in with a reference today (thank goodness my teachers love me) and i'll be heading in tomorrow or friday to drop off my info... there's an immediate opening at a school literally two minutes from my house.
here's hoping

what's the job description?
we have "aids" that work in our buildings. Some of them have cake jobs, copying papers or answering phones. there are other jobs with the same title and pay, that I would not want to do a few of them have to change diapers or be a personal aid to students with emotional problems.

I did the personal aid one. That was the most rewarding yet most draining time in my life.
I got bitten, had to clean stuff up, etc. I got nowhere near $19/hr.

i haven't gotten a specific quote - but it's supposed to be someone with a learning disability or a behavioural issue(s).
i don't think i'd be working with a physically or mentally handicapped child, don't you take special classes for that?
more investigation is needed. i touched base with one reference just now, and will check in on another one tomorrow. we'll see how it goes.

Some school districts--they're happy to get a warm body.
Schooling is nice--you can read up on your particular student's special needs in your off time---it really does help.

i think it would also be a great way to network. i need to meet more people that know people.
i don't want to get too excited though. i got shotdown at UPS and thought it was in the bag (MFers).

It is a good way to network, also to find out if you have different interests. It allows you to view the entire school system from one uninterrupted corner. You get to deal with the administration for the regular classes--any special admin they have for special ed. You get to deal with regular ed teachers and other staff. You might find you have skills and talents in some new arena you never considered.
I never knew I had a special skill to work with special ed students until on a whim I filled in for someone else short notice.
It is a skill that I use all the time now, oddly.

Not at our school we didn't.
It was an hourly wage and they didn't work a 40 hour week.
Plus, if you were just a sub you got no medical/dental benefits.
