... because it's so ironic that on the day of the gender-based thread I change both my avatar and my signature to support some of my opinions there BEFORE I even wrote them! I'm like, psychic, or something!

Current - the late, great Tupac Shakur.
Previous - the one and only Viggo Mortenson. Incidentally, my boss's twin sister often double-dated with Viggo in college (he dated her roommate). He's really a blonde.

I'm curious as to why people consider tupac or for that matter kurt cobain "great". neither of them was around long enough to establish greatness. Talented yes, great, no way.

They were prolific, talented, and influential to many other artists. Both changed the direction, and the face, of music, and were way ahead of their time. That's why they're great. On the flip side, there are plenty of acts that WERE around long enough to establish greatness that simply weren't great, like the Beatles, the original three-chord wonder boys.
I reject longevity as a benchmark for musical greatness. Several shorttimers in addition to Tupac and Cobain come to mind. Jimi Hendrix is a prime example, as is Randy Rhoads.

I believe longevity in addition to the other things you listed is part of the equation to achieve greatness. I personally can't stand the Beatles and Paul McCartney most of all.

I remember thinking that, too, as it happened the day before I turned seven years old.

The Pixies were a great band's band...despite never really getting huge, so many artists were influenced by them.
That's really all I have to say.
I. Go. Now.

I like Cobain's music very much, I also like the Pixies.
2Pac, no so much, the duet he did with Dr. Dre was good. "California"
