we have some digital thermometers around the house that give the inside and outside temperature. (my roomie is a tech/gadget geek)
i've noticed the one here in the basement office won't display if it's under 35F. i find that somewhat humoerous realy. why?

Maybe that adage about hell freezing over is incorrect after all.

Ya see Norm, the cheaper models are limited by their Nematic liquid crystals*. The ability of a display to perform at low temperature is usually limited by increasing viscosity and attendant slower on-off response, and not by freezing of the liquid.
*Nematic liquid crystals are ordered fluids whose molecules lie parallel to each other with their centers of mass randomly distributed. They are organic compounds and their molecules are rod-like in overall shape. The word "nematic" comes from the Greek "nema", meaning "thread-like." A thread-like pattern is observed when nematics are viewed through a microscope under polarized light

Tri Bob, it displays all dashes instead, the actual display is inside the house with an attached probe running outside.
