That a Friday Fubbiness when it warms up a little. Round 1 is shelf and rando.
I'm one of those runner-types too and I didn't realize that the women's world record for the marathon was so low.

As a wrestler, I despise title IX. It promotes womens sports at the expense of mens sports.
I am all for womens sports (I do have a daughter, you know) but title IX caused my college and many others to cut sports like wrestling because women were underrepresented!
Title IX might have been set up for a noble cause, but it has caused sports like wrestling, track and field, and even baseball programs to get desimated.

Very interesting. Great article--thanks P!
I thought about that exact point just the other day when I heard about Pat Summit's 800th win followed only days by Jody Conradt at UT (texas) and how under publicized it was. Not only did I go to college in the heart of Pat Summit country and know how widely respected she is in that area but it was a stark contrast between her accomplishment and Dean Smith's. I very vividly remember Dean Smith's 800 mark and all the hoopla around it (comparisons to Adolf Rupp, etc etc). Its sad, really.
As for title IX, I don't know, Monk makes an interesting point, and that is something that needs to be worked on...aren't there also sports girls play and guys don't? Field hockey for one? Anyway, I don't think abolishing it is the answer. I went to a high school where the AD said (outloud) he didn't understand the point of women's sports and would blatantly do what he could to dodge title nine to favor the high dollar guys sports (football, basketball, baseball) wth more money and resources. We and our parents fought him but to no avail because we won state in those while I was there.... However, I KNOW we wouldn't have had the even the opportunities we did without the law to protect us and only recently has stricter enforcement of it forced schools like my high school to straighten up a bit.
Sorry, my for today, I need to work again....

I don't think that the issue is a lack of female sports greats - i think the issue is the lack of exposure / press / respect etc given to female sports, their greats and their accomplishments.

Good points. If there had been equality in this from the get-go (as well as with a host of other issues in general - let's not get started on gender equity and pay) the corrective measures and the "cuts" to men's athletic programs would not be necessary.
