See, this is a matter of beauty and the beholder. A well done tattoo is a thing of beauty in my opinion, but I can see how you might see them as ugly. They do carry a certain stigma with them.

How long does 'well done' last though? Seems like anything over a year or two on somebody starts to spread around, get dull and creeping toward unrecognizeable, no?

And it also depends where you get it. Some places don't sag as much as others....

How about the bottomside of your tongue?
Then you could be selective about who you show it to

The tattoo industry comes out with newer, better inks all the time and have made great strides in inks that don't bleed and colors that don't dull.

Is there proof of that is or that just a line that tatoo artists like to throw out there because you know you won't be able to find them in 10-15 years when you've got mushy ink soup going on.

I think men's tats on their arms still tend to look good later. Calves, too--because you can cover them if you need to for some reason.

Hey right where mine are at.

And if they turn to mushy ink soup when I am older I could give a crap, I am sure I'll have other things to worry about then. Edited to say: my stepdad who got his many years ago overseas during the Korean war, he is 72 now, the tat's on both his arms are of course faded but you can stll read the lettering and know what both of them are!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No. I read industry publications. I see photos of tattoos that are 1-15 years old that still look good.

There's also big difference between overseas tattoos (i.e. Drunken sailor tattoos) and ones from America and Other western countries.

The quality of your tattoo depends on a number of variables.

Kinda sounds like 'customer beware'. Probably very few tat customers go through the research to get the best they can. Like most things, probably price, availability, word of mouth, etc, gets them to buy. If quality were the driving force, I'd be more impressed, but the average tat jobs out there on JQ.Public seems, well, PH said it, soupy. dunno

Exactly. A Tattoo should never be an impulse buy. Never.

You should have the following things in place:

Your art should be exactly what you want. No compromises.

Your artist should be extensively researched for:
1. Quality of materials
2. Aritisic Talent
3. Post-Tattoo customer satisfaction (ask around folks!)

I used to want to get one. Now it appears that I am different because I don't have a tattoo.
