If you were an understudy in a musical, let's say Cats, and you finally had an opportunity to get to play a big part in the show, would you memorize your big opening number and be prepared to perform when it was your turn?

I thought that's what understudies were supposed to do.

No! That's just what they would be expecting, wouldn't they?

If I was an understudy in a musical it would have to be the most desperate group of musicians ever conceived.....

when you play in a long-running show, it is your job to know a number of parts so that in the case of illness of one of the actors, there are others to fill in....it bumps down to losing someone out of the chorus then. If I were the understudy you can bet I'd know that part and pray that the lead got sick so I could take over and do an even better job than the star!

Party like there's no tomorrow because, well, there just wouldn't be a tomorrow. The end.

If I were ever cast in such a production, I would say bundle up, because it's getting awful cold in hell.

That's what i thought. The guy is normally part of the chorus, he dances and has the rare solo line. He is understudying the Rum Tum Tugger, which is a fairly big part and has the third song in the show. He almost missed his opening (he was hurrying to get into place and barely got off his first line. He delivered it weakly). Then, he forgot a verse and about half of the words to his song. He was cut off by the orchestra by mistake and the high energy song was slowed down quite a bit and just sounded horrible.
On the plus side, he sounded much better on the two others parts he had to sing later in the show.
There were two other understudies in the show last night, and they absolutely nailed their performances.

Yeah, what Keltic said, I would know it like the back of my hand and pray for the lead to have an illness so I could shine.

Rum Tum Tugger likes nothing more than a terrible muddle and all.... I could have sang his part, I have Cats and especially that song memorized

Good choices. But I just can't get the hysterical vision of him singing & dancing in makeup on stage.
