Posted: 05/26/05 - 12:45 Post subject: i think my generation is going to suck as grandparents...
i had a conversation with a friend at school about this yesterday. our resident east-indian marketing instructor, old guy, hard to understand, but really smart when you listen to him, amazes me. (this all actually spun from a conversation about plagarism, and reading material straight from an article without trying to understand it and make our own opinions)
we did projects in international marketing, and he's telling us all about different kinds of bananas (there are red ones you know) and sugar cane and pinneapples and the history of this that and the other thing, and knows soooo much stuff about so many things.
and i was thinking about how sometimes i look at the clouds and i'm like "dammit i learnt what those were called, why don't i remember?" and all kinds of other things.
and we thought - why don't we know anything about stuff?
we have the internet, it's supposed to be easy for us to get the info. we should be smarter as a result.
somehow - i think having access to the info has only made us dumber. we don't need to do research - we can look it up in like 5 minutes...
i just think i'm going to fail my grandchildren unless i start learning about more stuff. it's sad that i know who Britney Spears is dating and i can't tell you anything about cumulus clouds.

Why bother to learn it, when you can look it up within 5 minutes.
That basically explains tons of people I know both personally and professionally.
My answer: I saved 5 minutes b/c I already knew it.
Besides, it's fun kicking ass in trivia at the bar.

I've fully supplanted TLC with the History Channel

Books are good too - you actually stimulate more brain activity by reading than watching TV. Its good to exercise your imagination, even educational TV doesn't allow too much of that.

Maybe you could read something new. Along the sci-fi theme, if you've never Orwell's 1984 it's a classic and very, very good.

I don't know about you, but I don't associate my grandparents with knowledgeable. My grandfather is, mostly because he was an engineer and therefore wants to know how everything works. But as far as the rest of them go, I can't say they knew a lot about everything. That's just not how I identify my grandparents. Knowledge isn't a prerequisite.

Wise with advice and how to approach life, but not so much always the tedious meaningless details. Mine were all very smart, but that wasn't the defining factor for me.
