Posted: 05/10/05 - 16:04 Post subject: i got back my evaluations today
from my students that i taught this semester.
it seems that no one liked me. several people said i was rude and unprofessional and that i had favorites. and that i rushed class then complained about them leaving early.
sigh. im not sure how i feel. i know that its not my job to be liked, but i didnt expect that many bad evaluations. im more concerned about how this will effect my teaching in the future...

first off...they are college students, I've seen some people write some extremely rude things on those. (not me) I'm not excusing them, but understand your audience.
Secondly, it's only your first time. It'll get better. It really will.

to coach...
I'm sorry! Are there faculty you can talk to? were there any peer evaluations of your performance? I think student evaluations have a place, but I also think they need to be taken with a grain of salt. The whole bline evaluation thing can leave people feeling like they can be as harsh as they want to be and take out their last exam grade on you. Try not to take it personally and if there are other (possibly more legit) evaluations you can compare these to maybe it will be more helpful for your teaching going forward. Don't let it get to you!

Some students don't take responsibility for not learning. So don't hold to much weight with some of it.
Teaching takes a while to get a proper flow going. You'll do fine.

I would talk to profs or someone who has seen you teach who has experience. Get a more objective opinion before beating yourself up.

You're just starting out! Remember, these are, for the most part, self-absorbed, barely past adolescence students who think the world revolves around them.
Once you read them from that perspective....they really do need to be taken with a grain of salt.
If there are some genuine contructive ideas, perhaps think it over and see if it something you might need/want to change about yourself.
But if they are just spiteful and nasty then they probably aren't constructive, either.

Were you rude? ... were you unprofesional? ... Did you have favourites?
Without knowing you except from reading your posts over the last 20 months, I very much doubt that you were.
Your there to do a job, not to win a popularity contest.

but i'm with everyone here -- these are college kids doing a blind evaluation in most likely 10 minutes; impulsive answers and yes, they are self-absorbed at their age and i'd imagine their responses could be very blunt and harsh.....there may be a constructive comment buried in there somewhere, who knows, but try not to take it personally, after all you aren't there to win a popularity contest. teaching is the hardest job ever.
it may make you feel better to talk to other teachers just to see how they interpret the results seeing as how they have been reading this type of thing for a while.
don't beat yourself up over this!
and what Tri-Bob said

College kids can be really sh!ts, froggie. Many just want that degree to be given to them and don't want to work for it. I am surrounded by these girls. And I know that for at least 2 of my profs (who were REALLY great, just had a teaching style that was hard to get used to) rec'd nasty evals from my classmates. It made me mad, too. I'm all for constructive criticism (I suggested in Philo that she give chapter tests to help us understand what she wants us to take away from the course), but I'm not for being mean. Students just don't get that. I don't understand why it is necessary to hurt a prof like that. They're people too.
Anyhoo, consider the source, and think back on the semester. I am sure there are things that you did amazingly well, and there may be a few things that you can improve. And that's ok... this was your first go at it.
And you know, Kathryn and I just revamped her Computers in the Law syllabus because it made more sense to me (as a student) to change the order of the exercises she gave us this semester. She's been doing this for 20-some years. It's a process, that's all. You figure out what works and what doesn't work and make changes as necessary.
Hang in there. You're going to be fine.

You should look into research on student evaluations. I am actually working on something right now regarding faculty peer evaluations and have come across some interesting statistics. Did you know that women are consistantly rated as worse teachers by their students? Same goes for math and science. So, don't be too hard on yourself.

Tha sux. But this is all new for you. If it's true you have some work to do, learn from this. My association with college kids says they can be a bit harsh though. I'm sorry.
