Are you a TA? In Canada that's where upper year undergrads or grad students teach tutorial sessions. In my undergrad EVERYTHING was blamed on the TA, that was just the culture. Flawed and immature - but hey, we were undergrads!

College students are also really hard on new teachers - its like they can smell the fear or something.

Phillycat's research sounds interesting.

One more note regarding evaluations, there was actually a lot of research done regarding "value-added" teaching and evaluations. This one professor in particular taught a statistics class and received rave reviews from his students. However, the students didn't really learn anything, he merely taught them how to regurgitate (sp?) information. So he decided to look into the connection between positive evaluations and level of student learning achieved.

So I guess what I'm saying is, regardless if they liked you or not, do you feel that they learned something? If so, job well done.

thanks everyone.

im almost postive the people who gave the really bad comments were from a group of girls who had major attitute problems and issues with me the entire semester.

background for one inicident: the ac/heat in the room where i teach does not work. it was always incredibly hot in the room. it got worse as the weather warmed up so every week i would have a window open to at least have some air flow. the girls in the back would take it upon themselves to close the window whenever they wanted. in the middle of my lectures that never lasted more than 30 minutess. on a particularly warm, but breezy day, when even other students complained about the temp, they got up and closed the window again, with out asking, becuase their stuff was blowing around. i stopped talking and asked her what she was doing and to reopen the window. she couldnt get it open by herself, so i told her to sit back down because she needed to listen to me. i was clearly irritated, but not anywhere near as rude as i could have been.

anyway, none of those girls did very well on any of my exams which are practical style. i guess thats one reson why i got back feedback.

for TOsteve: i am a TA for a lecture class, but students have to register separately for my class (its a different coourse number than the lecture) and i pretty much have the go ahead to teach whatever and however i want.

oh well, i assume that someone would have contacted me by now if i was in danger of not being able to teach anymore so im not going to worry about it. it still sucks rocks though.

Without knowing you except from reading your posts over the last 20 months, I very much doubt that you were.

Your there to do a job, not to win a popularity contest.

Even if you were just there to do a job, and I have no doubt you did it well, I find it hard to believe they would dump on you en masse.

You. Rock. Very Happy
