of this ribbon have you seen on vehicles?
I saw at least 6 on my way home from work yesterday., including a camo magnet.
at what point does a symbol of support become trite, cliche, and ineffective?

I've seen 4.
There's the yellow one you posted, there's that same yellow one with "God Bless our Troops" and then a Red/White/Blue versions of Support and God Bless.
During Operation Desert Storm, I was the community organizer of goody boxes for the troops. We also sent letters. I wouldn't know until years later how much the support at home meant to the troops overseas fighting a war. Even the support from total strangers.
My husband found some pictures a couple weeks ago of his community tieing yellow ribbons around trees when he served in the Gulf War, and he got choked up-14 years later. He also said he was lucky enough to have a big family who kept him supplied in letters, but there were a lot of people in the armed services who don't have family and letters and other means of support from total strangers was a big booost to them. It reaffirmed they are doing a good thing, protecting our freedom.
I believe the support (in way someone chooses to express it) becomes trite when they do it out of habit rather than out of true support (I hope that made sense).

It happened a long time ago for the wear yellow bracelets. It's still a good cause and I suppose as long as you can get people to spend money on it, it's still working. But a heck of a lot of people don't even know why they're wearing it. It just became the "cool" thing to wear. I hate trends.
