A local coach( one of our rivals, we played them second game of the season) was fired last Thursday.

Turns out he was having "relations" with one of his players.

I'm glad he was fired, but it makes me wonder a couple of things.

1. How common is this? I know that I could and would never stoop to this sort of behavior, but I have a sinking suspicion that this is more common than people think.

2. Does this affect my position?
Like it or not, I am a man coaching a team of teenage girls, when something like this happens....does it shed a negative light on all of us. I think it does. It's unfair, but it does.

I think a lot more people think stuff like that is going on a lot more than it actually is.

My wife's high school coach was sleeping with one of his players when she was on the team. That was over 10 years ago and he's still the head coach today. You wonder how he was never found out and how many times he's done it since. And he's married with kids, not that that matters, I guess. Confused

The girls basketball coach at my high school ended up marrying one of his former players after she graduated. There was at least a 15 yr age difference. I'm not implying though that they were doing anything during her hs career. they are still married and have a pack of kids too.

Should girls' teams be only coached by female coaches? And vice-versa?
That'd solve it most of the time I'd think.

you see, it is more common than you think.

This is the third coach that I know of, that I have coached against, in the 10 years I have been coaching basketball, that has been fired for this.

Now, factor in how many people are doing this and not getting caught. Also, factor in that I teach and coach in Rural South Dakota...not too many schools in this state.

That's scary.

There's a reason I want to remain the head girls coach until my daughter graduates. I least I know she'll be safe.

He was a social studies teacher also and my track coach. I really doubt anything was going on while she was in school - he seemed like a true stand up guy. But wth do I know.

coach,

you remind me
i live in a shell

stb parent of jr. high female athlete

just wondering what you'd do if that were your child? isn't he breaking the law Mad

to answer my own question.....i think my husband would probably spend the rest of his life in prison. just sayin.

and no i don't, at this point, think it reflects negatively on all HS coaches. coaches in our district are so hard to find and keep. i'd bet it would be impossible to get all female coaches for all the girls' teams; i think they try this first but sometimes, it just isn't possible.

i don't blame you for being coach

It happened while I was in HS as well.
It was a female teacher and a few male students...

I had a HS teacher that constantly asked me to run away with him and kissed me in class one day. I was a Sophomore and very innocent. Embarassed

If he tried it on me, how many more girls did he try that with?

*He dropped dead of a heart attack at school one day.

If this happened to my daughter, I'm not saying I'd kill the guy, but I'd come after him.

It just makes me feel ... I don't know...nervous? dunno
All it takes is one girl to come forward and say you did something, even if you didn't... you could be ruined forever.

This guy...I'm really pissed at this guy. It makes us all look bad.

Honestly? I know it sounds stupid but I was very young and innocent. My parents still don't know.
