short version. My first crash and burn marathon. Mad Things were good until 38k and then i cramped, stumbled walked, and with 10 meters to go they had a wheelchair for me. I was totally in my right mind and had to tell them to get away, that I would crawl if I had to. It took me marathon 14 to say this "marathons are harder than childbirth".

If not for the great spectators it was a dnf. It had to be awful for my DH to watch

yikes...cramps do suck especially if they happen more than 2 miles before the finish..was it a hydration/nutrition issue or was it more of a pacing problem that you didn't notice till the last minute?

Sorry that things didn't go well for you....rest up and recover soon.

dehydration. I took in alot of fluids but the temps rose faster than expected, plus it was supposed to be cloudy. It was 79f at the finish......I think that's about 22 or 23C. Pacing was very comfortable until about 36 and the cramping and walking started at 38k.....Oprah would have passed me at that point Neutral Live and learn. looks like Im in for Chicago........always cold there. I got a free invite to Victoria (the race director witnessed my struggle and probably felt sorry for me) this fall...so maybe another CA race.

Good news is that I did get some $$ so pity party is on me and I'm probably on the news tonight because the media likes nothing better than to shove a camera in the face of someone struggling for minute to push 5 meters to the finish

Victoria's a nice race...I ran it last year for my first. Scenery's great...alot of the course goes along the waterfront, lots of crowd support near the end, perfect racing conditions (though it may rain as it frequently does in the Pacific NW) Course is mostly undulating but if you have done alot of your training on the hills, the hills there should be a piece of cake. Your time may be a bit slower than what you might get on a flat course like NYCM...only 1 person in the entire history of this race has broken 2:20.

Are you sponsored btw?

no, no sponsorship. I am starting to get comped entries--that's about it and a few hotel offer (in races so close by.....why bother)

I'm hoping for your sake their pushing the date of Chicago back this year does make it cooler. '04 was H-O-T, '05 was better.
