No second chance for drunk's victim
With regards to the article, Drunk driver spared jail after killing city woman (Free Press, Aug. 29): At what point does a man with a blood-alcohol level three times the limit get off with a conditional sentence?
Ignoring the fact that this women died and that this was a first offence for a respected father and person, you have to ask: What kind of example is being set when someone can so thoroughly break the law and only be given a slap on the wrist?
I'm a 20-year-old kid who has seen bar pals take off in their vehicles drunk on more than one occasion. And they'll continue to do so until they are caught, or until somebody dies. The sick thing is it most likely won't be them dying.
If laws aren't being enforced the only fear they have is death, and teenagers are invincible, if you recall. It's painful to see that adults are making these same decisions.
Enforce the law, take away their licences for life if they can't handle the responsibility. Driving is not a right, it's a privilege. Life, on the other hand, is most certainly a right.
If you can get behind the wheel of a car with triple the legal limit of alcohol in your blood, you don't deserve to have access to a vehicle. Let's put it in perspective: We don't leave guns sitting out for children, why leave cars out for drunks? This is a man who worked at a casino, was 39, a father, respected and had no prior criminal record. This is a man that knew better and got off because of it. First time or not, the law was broken and it's just been proven that you can get away with it.
Get the drunks off the street before more people die.
There's no plea bargain for the victim. She doesn't get a second chance, even though it's her first time dying.

Great job! It's nice to hear someone your age speak out on an issue as important as this. I'm so glad that it's been noticed and being published for others to read.
The Publishers made a great choice!
