FCC Extends 911 Deadline For VoIP Providers
Thousands Of Customers Could Lose Service

WASHINGTON -- The Federal Communications Commission has extended a deadline that could have left tens of thousands of people with no Internet phone service next week.
The move affects companies that provide services for Internet-based phone calls. They'll now have more time to obtain acknowledgments that their customers understand problems they could encounter when dialing 911 in an emergency.
The FCC originally told the providers of the Voice over Internet Protocol they should disconnect service by Tuesday to customers who hadn't responded. However, the agency has now extended that deadline to Sept. 28.
A coalition of Internet phone providers had asked the Federal Communications Commission for a 90-day extension of the deadline.
The providers, which include AT&T, MCI, and T-Mobile USA, said the FCC order could have left customers stranded in an emergency.
The FCC issued its initial order in May after a series of highly publicized incidents in which VoIP users were unable to connect with a 911 operator.
The commission ordered the companies to provide full 911 capabilities by late November.
